(See also Pass. 1201) Transcriber's Notes: *The numbering system employed is that of the transcriber and not of the lister. The original document consisted of two pages, each numbered 1-30. Lister used these numbers and at times partially filled a page. Transcriber numbered consecutively. *Place of last residence: At bottom of manifest page: "The last country in which alien resided with the intention of remaining as long as one year shall be the last permanent residence regardless of length of actual residence therein" A ? indicates letter or letters which could not be read because of the quality of the document. The parentheses is used to add comments of transcriber and to clarify where necessary - they were not that of the lister himself. Passenger 548 begins the steerage passengers through to the end of the Manifest. Beginning with Pass. 1176, all of these Steerage passengers embarked at Queenstown, Ireland on October 23. Recapitulation: First Class 79 Aliens 127 US Cit. 206 Total Second Cabin 237 Aliens 104 US Cit. 341 Total Steerage 739 Aliens 94 US Cit. 833 Total 1380 Total Passengers It is worth noting that Passenger 55 was famed author W. Somerset Maugham (1874-1965), best known for his novel, "Of Human Bondage". Correspondence 01/11/03 passengers # Lyon I wanted to say THANK YOU, that because of Lora Lee Ament's work, I discovered more information about my Great-Aunt Delia Conlon. Via GOOGLE, I made a surprise discovery of the transcription while searching on the names (Delia isn't that common). And because of Laura Lee's thoughtful cross-referencing between Delia (1204) and Cecelia Lyons (1191), you've uncovered yet another family link for me. My Great-Aunt's maiden name was indeed Lyons, and while I don't know for sure, I'm fairly certain that Frank Lyons (husband of Cecelia) must be Delia's older brother. Delia and Cecelia are probably sisters-in-law, and they had taken their children back to Ireland to meet their grandparents. It certainly gives me a new insight on ship passengers and reasons for transit, as the Titanic disaster happened only 18 months later! Chris Novak
