Transcriber's Notes: *The numbering system employed is that of the transcriber and not of the lister. The original document consisted of two pages, each numbered 1-30. Lister used these numbers and at times partially filled a page. Transcriber numbered consecutively. *Place of last residence: At bottom of manifest page: "The last country in which alien resided with the intention of remaining as long as one year shall be the last permanent residence regardless of length of actual residence therein" A ? indicates letter or letters which could not be read because of the quality of the document. The parentheses is used to add comments of transcriber and to clarify where necessary - they were not that of the lister himself. Passenger 548 begins the steerage passengers through to the end of the Manifest. On this section of the Manifest, Lister used either the column "Nearest Relative/ friend" or the columns 18-23 to record information on Citizenship. Transcriber has listed this information about citizenship in the space where "Nearest Relative, etc." belongs, where applicable, and titled it "Citizenship/ Naturalization. Recapitulation: First Class 79 Aliens 127 US Cit. 206 Total Second Cabin 237 Aliens 104 US Cit. 341 Total Steerage 739 Aliens 94 US Cit. 833 Total 1380 Total Passengers It is worth noting that Passenger 55 was famed author W. Somerset Maugham (1874-1965), best known for his novel, "Of Human Bondage".
