SS Caronia

Required by the regulations of the Secretary of Commerce and Labor of the United States, under Act of Congress approved February 20, 1907, to be delivered to the United States Immigration Officer of any vessel having such passengers on board upon arrival at a port in the United States.

Affidavit of the Master or Commanding Officer, or First or Second Officer.
I, Jas. C. Barr, of the Caronia from Liverpool do solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear that I have caused the surgeon of said vessel sailing therewith or the surgeon employed by the owners thereof, to make a physical and oral examination of each and all of the aliens named in the foregoing Lists or Manifest Sheets, 30* in number, and that from the report of said surgeon and from my own investigation, I believe that no one of said aliens is an idiot or imbecile or a feeble-minded person, or insane person, or a pauper, or is likely to become a public charge, or is afflicted with tuberculosis or with a loathsome or dangerous contagious disease, or is a person who has been convicted of, or who admits having committed a felony or other crime or misdemeanor involving moral turpitude, or is a polygamist or one admitting belief in the practice of polygamy, or an anarchist, or under promise or agreement, express or implied, to perform labor in the United States, or a prostitute, or a woman or girl coming to the United States for the purpose of prostitution, or for any other immoral purpose, and that also, according to the best of my knowledge and belief, the information in said Lists or Manifests concerning each of said aliens named therein is correct and true in every respect. Whitaker, Surgeon of the Caronia sailing therewith do solemnly, sincerely and truly swear that I have had 21 years' experience as a Physician and Surgeon, and that I am entitled to practice as such by and under the authority of L.R.C.P. London, and that I have made a personal examination of each of the aliens named herein, and that the foregoing Lists or Manifest Sheets 30* in number, are, according to the best of my knowledge and belief, full, correct, and true in all particulars, relative to the mental and physical condition of such aliens. Transcriber's Notes:
*The numbering system employed is that of the transcriber and not of the lister.
 The original document consisted of two pages, each numbered; however lister 
 numbered from 1-30, in groups. Transcriber numbered consecutively.
*Place of last residence: At bottom of manifest page "The last country in which 
 alien resided with the intention of remaining as long as one year shall be the
 last permanent residence regardless of length of actual residence therein"
*30 pages. Actually there are 56 pages, for this Captain's statement was
 duplicated through the Manifest 3 times.
A ? indicates letter or letters which could not be read because of the quality
 of the document. The parentheses is used to add comments of transcriber and to 
 clarify where necessary - they were not that of the lister himself.
In Col.16-Money on hand, lister often placed a checkmark and it is not clear 
 what he meant; perhaps he did not ask this information of the First-class passengers. 
The following passengers had "Non Immigrant Alien" stamped over Col.10-Last
 Perm. address: 2,3,4,5,8,11,13,15,16,17,18,19,20,21,22,24,25,26.
It is worth noting that Passenger 55 was famed author W. Somerset Maugham 
(1874-1965), best known for the novel "Of Human Bondage".
