Ship Werra
I, Julius Barre, master of Ship Werra do solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of Customs of the Collections District of New York, is a full and perfect list of all the passengers taken on board of the said Ship Werra at Bremen, Germany, from which port said Ship Werra has now arrived; and that on the said list is truly designated the age, the sex, and the occupation of each of the said passengers, the part of the vessel occupied by each during the passage, the country to which each belongs, the country of which it is intended by each to become an inhabitant; and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of said passengers who have died on said voyage, and the names and ages of those who have died. Sworn to this May 26, 1883. So help me God. (signed) Julius Barre. Sworn before me this May 26, 1883, (signed) R?iznstcah??

Transcriber's Notes:
Numbering on the original manifest begins with 1 in each section of the
ship. Continuous numbering has been used throughout this ship.
Many given names are abbreviated or shortened with superscript used.
Superscript is represented by a ^ between the two sections of the
name (i.e. Wilh^m).
Sometimes G. was used to represent Germany and sometimes it wasn't used.
The names of cities have letters missing, presumably to shorten the
writing task. (i.e. Wurttemberg is spelled Wurttberg, Wurttembg, etc.)
The baggage column has brackets that connect groups with one count on bags
making it appear that some have a lot of baggage and others have none.
Transient passage = prepaid passage from Bremen to New York, regardless of
final destination of the passenger.
Protracted sojourn (P/S) = prepaid passage from Bremen to the final
destination, which could be New York or other location indicated for
each passenger.

Josef/Joseph Hortsch was born December 6, 1864 in Ottok (a small
village in Upper Silesia), Germany. He was the first of his family
to emigrate to the United States. He was a passenger on the ship
Werra which sailed from Breman to New York, disembarking on
May 26, 1883. After his passage he settled first in Buckman,
Minnesota where he married Martha Otremba on June 21. 1887.
Joseph worked as a shoemaker and a farmer. He later moved to
Oregon, where he died on Sept. 1. 1938. Today his many descendents

Correspondence 05/06/01 passengers #673 & 674 Nelissowitsch
My mother's paternal grandparents, August Michael and Anna Nelissowitsch,
with their 10-month-old son, August, arrived in New York on May 26, 1883, on
the ship, the SS Werra. Their protracted sojourn took them to Syracuse,
N.Y, where they settled. They were from Prussia, part of Germany. In
America, my great-grandfather's name was shortened to Nelipovitz, which
is my mother's maiden name and that of her entire family in Syracuse, N.Y.
In Syracuse, August Michael worked as a laborer at the soda ash works.
He died on May 12, 1911 in Syracuse of typhoid fever at the age of 57.
He was in this country for 28 years. He is buried in St. Agnes Cemetery
in Syracuse." If you are researching this family please contact
Carolyn Straub of San Jose, Calif., great-granddaughter of
August Michael and Anna Nelissowitsch, formerly of Syracuse, N.Y.
