Transcriber's Notes:
*Paqt is an abbreviation for Paquet, the French word for Packet.
*In the "Report of Passengers" statement, the word ?aerge is handwritten in.
The ? represents a J or T.
*The column for remarks was not used and has been eliminated. The column for
allegiance was used only for passengers #203 through 209.
*The country of birth is written as Germany, the place of settlement as New York,
and occupation as Farmer for Passengers #1,40,81,122 and 163. These passengers
were the first entries at the top of a new page. Through the use of ditto marks,
this information was then attributed to all of the first 192 passengers.
*Where there is more than one possible interpretation of a name, the most likely
one is listed above and the others are included in these notes.
*Question marks represent letters that are not clear. When possible they are
explained in these notes.
*Passenger #41, this infant almost certainly belongs to the Gloecker family
although her last name is written clearly as Gloeckle.
*Passenger #50, surname could be Dieterich, given name is either Valemin or
Valimin.
*Passenger #52, surname could be Einreaechter, Eimeaechter, Einwaechter or
Einvaechter.
*Passengers #67,68, surname is Rhynes or Rhyner.
*Passengers #72 through 77, surname is Bom or Bons.
*Passengers #78 through 84, the ? marks represent two to three letters. The first
? could be w, ix or ex. The last ? is a short, slightly thickened curved line
that is not attached to the letter in front of it though it may have a short
line leading into the top of it. It could be an s.
*Passenger #80, age is either 10 or 16.
*Passenger #85, the ? represents either an e or a flourish, so the surname is
Kolb or Kolbe.
*Passenger #102, given name could be Sebastuan.
*Passengers #111,112,113,114, surname is Dreseler or Drexler.
*Passengers #115,116,117,118, surname may be Rastdoser or Rasidoser.
*Passenger #126, age is either 3 months or 9 months.
*Passenger #135, surname could be Westermann, Wessermann, Westeimann, or
Wesseimann.
*Passengers #137,138, surname could be Fug.
*Passenger #141, name may be Chrusen.
*Passenger #145, the ? looks like an i or r.
*Passenger #149 through #155, surname is Morel or Mosel.
*Passenger #153, given name could be Mim, Mins, or Mini, or Mine.
*Passenger #159, the ? could be w or u.
*Passenger #171, ? is an R or K.
*Passenger #172, the given name could be Adam though the A does not really match
other A's on the list. It could also be Idam.
*Passengers #176,177,178, surname is Roth or Both.
*Passenger #187, may be J? Gusse.
*Passenger #192, age probably is 37.
*Passengers #193-209 are listed separately from the names preceeding them and
their entries are written in a different hand. The numbers for these seventeen
passengers were added by me, as they are not numbered on the manifest.
*Passenger #193, Professor is written in the column intended for Allegiance.
Dittos also carry the occupation of Farmer down from the preceding part of the
list.
*Passengers #194 through 199, through the use of dittos, the column information
is the same as that given for Passenger #193.
*Passenger #197, after the name of this passenger, on the same line, there is a
right-leaning slash mark followed by the word Servants. /Servants is partially
in the name column and partially in the age column so that the age of the
passenger is squeezed into a space slightly above the end of word Servants. It
is not clear who the Servants are, though the reference may be to one or more
of the next passengers on the list.
*Passenger #199, the letters represented by the ? marks are unreadable because
there are several letters written over each other. The first ? may be an i or
r, the second ?, an o or s.
*Passenger #200, a surname was written, then it was written over as though a
misspelling was being corrected. It appears as if the name was originally
written as Freeaff. Allegiance appears to be Germany though something else
seems to be written under or over Germany.
*Passenger #201, the allegiance column originally said U.St. It was over-written
by Merchant.
*Passenger #202, there is an area of heavy ink at the base of the right side of
the B. It is possible there is another letter there, so the surname could be
Brandenburgh. The country of birth and place of settlement were both
originally filled in as Germany. In each case, France was written over the
word Germany.
*Passenger #203, place of birth is uncertain. Spain and Italy are written over
one another and it is not clear which one was written last. It looks like
Spain was written first and Italy was written over it as a correction.
Allegiance was originally filled in as Spain, but that was over-written with
N York. There is another word written under Priest in the occupation column,
but I cannot make it out.
*Passenger #204, birth place was written as Germany, then changed to U States.
*Passenger #206, given name is represented by an initial that could be L, I or J.
*Passenger #208, this entry is a mess. What follows the letter T is a jumble of
letters written over other letters. It could be Tisson, the name of Passenger
#209, but it could also be something else altogether. Following that name is
the word Ladey, which was subsequently crossed out.

George & Anna are my 3rd Great Grandparents, their son Johan(John) is
my 2nd Great Grandfather. Johan's son William John is my Great Grand
Father and William's son David Dean is my Grandfather. William John
migrated from Iowa to South Dakota and eventually settled in Sioux Falls,
South Dakota which is where I was born in the 1960's.
I just received a biography from Clayton County, Iowa that lists their
place of origin as:
THEN (1846): Schwenningen, Rottweil, Württemburg, Germany.
NOW (2005): Villingen-Schwenningen, Schwarzwald-Baar, Baden-Württemberg, Germany.
I have sent a letter to an archive that holds the LeHavre passenger lists,
if I get the whole thing I will forward a scanned copy or transcript to you.
