Passenger #6 Payne
George Payne was b. c. 1805 in Kent, England. He m. Matilda Huckstep 25 Dec
1825 in Frindsbury, Chatham, Kent. Their first child, Eliza, was baptized
(as were all the children) at St. Mary's in Chatham in 1826. Their next
child, Fanny, bap. 21 Dec 1828, is my g-g-grandmother. After three more
children, Henry was b. 28 Oct 1837; he is my g-g-grandfather. George owned
or leased several pubs in the Chatham area but when Henry was born his
occupation on the birth certificate was "laborer." On 1 Aug 1851 he and the
rest of the family, except for Eliza, landed in New York. They were in
Cuyahoga County, OH, the following year, as Fanny married in Nov. 1852. They
apparently settled in the Rockport area of Cleveland as several family
members were buried in the old Rockport cemetery. Matilda and George died
sometime before 15 Oct 1868, as George's probate was filed then. Fanny's son
Alfred Payne Burton and Henry's daughter Minnie Eliza Payne married about
1882, making me my own fourth cousin.
