Transcriber's notes:
Use of an * indicates an omission or error made by the original recorder
not the transcriber.
Use of a ? indicates a letter or words that cannot be read due to the
quality of the original document.
Opening Statement:
?? = In both instances the two capital letters appear to be "SL" or "GL"
"List of Manifest" final statement:
?? Stura = the two capital letters appear to be "SL" or "GL"
Naples ?? = the two letters look like "IC". (Naples is a city in the
region of Campania - the two letters could possibly signify the
abbreviation for "Italy, Campania")
Under the "Surname" column, a relationship to a passenger above was
sometimes noted. Those passengers are designated by a "*" and the
relationship explained below. Note: Once the writer indicated either
"figlia" (daughter) or "figlio" (son) under a name, he just made ditto
marks on all subsequent lines for that family. He did not change the
relationship designation on each line to match the gender designation
under "Sex". In some cases where there was only one child, the original
writer did not match the relationship designation to the gender he had
indicated under "Sex".
The column headed "Sex" listed either "maschio" (male) or "femmine"
(female) and they were shortened to "M" and "F".
Under column headed "Calling" (occupation), entries for passengers 1-51
were originally written in Italian, then crossed out and the English
equivalent written in. Starting with passenger #51 the remainder were
left in Italian. Those written in Italian will be translated below. The
translation will duplicate the exact version of the original writer's
translation if the crossed out word was legible. The remainder will be
translated with the use of a dictionary.
The column headed "The Country of which they are Citizens" was eliminated
since "Italiano" was listed for every passenger on the list with the
exception of passengers #3, #4 and #5 whose notation read "Gerusalemme"
("Jerusalem"). The column headed Transient or on Transit or Intending
Protracted Sojourn" was eliminated since the notation under that column
was "Immigrant" for every single passenger on the list. The column headed
"Dates and Cause of Death" was eliminated because the quality of the
document made it impossible to determine if anything had been recorded.
Under "Destination" writer appears to have spelled U.S. cities phonetically.
Following are possibilities:
Broccolin=Brooklyn, Cicago=Chicago, Lincol Neb=Lincoln Nebraska, San Louis=
St. Louis, Filadelfia=Philadelphia, Baltimora=Baltimore, Pisberg=Pittsburg,
Colorados=Colorado, Eureca Nevada=Eureka Nevada, Bost????=Boston, Ingst????
Ohio=Youngstown Ohio. Note: The last letters of Bos??? and Ingst??? appear
the same or very similar so the writer MAY have intended "ton" or "town"
as in Boston and Youngstown.
# 3 First word could be "Anni" or "Ansio". Believe surname is listed
second as ditto marks were under second word rather than the first
word as in other entries. "The Country of which they are Citizens"
indicated "Gerusalemme" (Jerusalem).
# 4 Believe surname is listed second as ditto marks are under second
word rather than the first word as in other entries. "The Country
of which they are Citizens" indicated "Gerusalemme" (Jerusalem).
# 5 "idem" was written with a lower case "i" and could mean "ditto"
indicating name of passenger #5 was also Compagna. Believe surname
is listed second as ditto marks are under second word rather than
the first word as in other entries. "The Country of which they are
Citizens" indicated "Gerusalemme" (Jerusalem).
#16 Designated as "figlio" under #15
#17 Designated as "figlio" under #15
#23 Designated as "figlio" under #22
#29 Designated as "figlio" under #28
#30 Designated as "figlio" under #28
