I, B B?anke, Master of the German SS Saale do solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of the City of New York, is a full and perfect list of all the passengers taken on board the said steamer at Bremen via Southampton from which port said steamer has now arrived; and that on said list is truly designated the age, the sex, and the calling of each of said passengers, the location of the compartment or space occupied by each during the passage, the country of citizenship of each, and also the destination or location intended by each; and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of said passengers who have died on said voyage, and the dates and causes of death, and the names and ages of those who died; also of the pieces of baggage of each; also a true statement, so far as it can be ascertained, with reference to the intention of each alien passenger as to a protracted sojourn in this country. Transcribers Notes:
1. The use of an * indicates an omission or error made by the original recorder.
2. The use of a ? indicates a word or letters that could not be read, due to the
quality of the original document.
3. Because of damage to the manifest where portions are torn, missing, or
blackened around a torn or missing piece, the right-hand half of the passenger
list will be handled somewhat differently than absolutely following the
above two notes. See notes 12-21 for details.
4. Passengers included on this list are 107 thru 252.
5. Passengers 107 thru 144 are a continuation of II Cabin Passengers boarding at
Bremen, according to the transcriber who has the previous portion of this
manifest.
6. Passengers 145 thru 156 are listed under the heading "II Cabin Passengers
ta??? on board at Southampton".
7. Passengers 157 thru 252 are listed under the heading "Steerage Passengers,
ta??? on board at B?????". Compartments are listed for single men, families,
and single women. The portion that lists these by roman numerals I, II, and
III, is torn and partially missing, however, the manifest seems to go well
with that order for the above.
8. There are three distinct examples of handwriting on this portion of the
manifest. The headings for each set of passengers has been entered by one
person, who also evidently wrote in "U.St:" in both the Country of which
they are Citizens and the Intended Destination columns for passengers 107
and 157. This makes those two entries suspect, as the rest of the entries
for passengers 107-161 (exclusive of the aforementioned discrepancy) have
been written in a by a second person. The handwriting again changes
considerably with passengers 162-252 being entered by a third person.
9. As stated above the passenger list, the Date and Cause of Death column has
been eliminated.
10. A * in the sex column indicates that there was no information written in
that area.
11. For all females and underage children that have no occupation listed, it
has been indicated on the manifest that there was no occupation. A * in
this column indicates the space has been left blank.
12. The Country of which they are Citizens and Intended Destination columns
will be left blank where it was left blank on the manifest. See the
following note for other reasons for a blank space in these two columns.
13. A blank space in any of the last four columns will also be left when the
condition of the manifest is torn, missing, or blackened around a torn or
missing piece to the extent that it is impossible to accurately read the
area or to even determine whether or not there is any writing in the space.
This is of most concern for the Location and transient/In Transit/Protracted
Sojourn columns, and is the reason for so many ? in these two columns, as
much of the information is in the form of ditto marks and is dependent upon
being able to read the previous person's information. It is done also with
the Intended Destination column, but to a much lesser degree, as the extent
of damage is usually not so great as to warrant a question mark in the
following entries. The notation will read: torn, missing or blackened.
14. A blank space in one of the last four columns may be followed by information that is
taken from the presence of a ditto mark. In that case the blackening is slight, and
simply indicates that either there is no ditto mark or the mark has been destroyed or
is questionable. Whatever the reason, it is clear that no actual "words" are written
there. There will be no notation.
15. A ?? in Intended Destination column indicates that only that portion is torn and
missing.
16. The word Steerage has been used for the Location column where the original manifest
has it written out either as "Steerage Compartment" or as "Steerage Comp".
17. A ? in the Location column indicates that there was information written in, but is
dependent upon previous information above it that is missing or obliterated.
18. A * in the Location column (passengers 180-191) indicates that the ditto marks used
to indicate "Steerage Compartment" are absent, however, the compartment number is
given.
19. Where the Number of Baggages column has what appears to be a period in it, it will be
treated as that individual's baggage is combined with another passengers' rather than
having none. Individual notes will be made.
20. A ? in the Transient/In Transit/Protracted Sojourn column indicates that there was
information written in, but is dependent upon previous information above it that is
missing or obliterated.
21. A * in the Transient/In Transit/Protracted Sojourn column indicates that there was no
information written in that area.
22. ? on Captain's name; could be a l or r.
23. Individual passenger notes follow (by passenger number):
107 - Age may be 27. The only remains of the second digit is what looks to be a period,
level with the bottom of the 2. It is consistent with some of the ways that the
cross-stroke on a 7 have been made on this manifest, and does not seem to be
consistent with any other number.
107 - "U. St:" in the Country of which they are Citizens and the Intended Destination
columns is suspect - see note 8, above.
112 - Last two columns are torn, missing, or blackened.
113 - Last three columns are torn, missing, or blackened.
115 - No number of baggages indicated individually, is combined with passenger 116 by a }.
122 - No number of baggages indicated individually, is combined with passenger 121 by a }.
124 - Last column is torn, missing, or blackened.
125 - Last two columns are torn, missing, or blackened.

137 - First name W?l??. May be Wally, Wollz, or Woltz. Believe it is really Woltz (an
unusual first name), however, if it is, the t is uncrossed. I have dismissed Wally
as the most likely because the second letter is not at all consistent (distinctive)
as other a's written by the same person (a likelier letter is o), and because
the last letter is more consistent with a z than with a y or g.
139 - Miss Mengel's first initial looks to be an E that is written over a G.
139 - Age may be 27 or 29.
140 - Louis, a male name is given for a female; should it be Louise?
141 - No number of baggages indicated individually, is combined with passenger 142 by a }.
143 - ? on number of baggages, looks like a period, which may indicate it is combined
with passengers 141 and 142.
144 - Same note as above.
145 - Last two columns are torn, missing, or blackened.
146 - No number of baggages indicated individually, is combined with passenger 147 by a }.
146 - Last name ? may be either a y or a g.

171 - First name is written as Jacobs.
171 - No number of baggages indicated individually, is combined with passengers 172-175

173 - Country says "U St", although rest of this family is from Russia. This may
indicate that this individual came to the U.S. previously, and travelled back
to Europe to bring his parents and brother and sister to the U.S.
