Ditto marks were used extensively throughout, causing confusion when words were added later in between. Wherever practical words were spelled out in full by the transcriber. Numerous remarks were added in several columns in a handwriting different from that of the original writer, namely: -In the 'Occupation' column: Words like wife, daughter, son, child etc. were added later but the original ditto marks were left in place, causing confusion; -In the 'Country of origin' column: The word 'Netherlands' was crossed out and replaced with 'Holland'. Where the original writer used 'Germany' and ditto marks, the names of specific regions in Germany were later added: Bavaria, Bayern (=Bavaria) and Holstein. The transcriber omitted the word 'Germany' intentionally to reduce the page width. - -In the 'Destination' column: The original writer used 'America' and ditto marks throughout. The letters 'US of' were placed before 'America' in two places, but have been omitted by the transcriber intentionally to reduce the page width. Passenger Notes: * 1-3 Surname has umlaut over 'o' * 6 & 7 Krugel - occupation column is blank. * 13&16 Therese - accent aigu over first 'e', accent grave over second 'e'. * 24 Berhand: possibly misspelled for Bertrand or Bernhard. * 24 In 'Occupation' column: 'child' crossed off 'son' written in. * 30 Peter Kraemer - occupation of 'Segarmaker' transcribed as written. * 33 Therese - accent aigu over first 'e', accent grave over second 'e'. * 38 Short horizontal line in 'Occupation' column likely means 'none'. * 41 F?e?sen - could be 'Freisen' or 'Fiersen'. * 44 Susanne Vermouw - Verwouw is a more common Dutch name. (see correspondence below) * 72 Original ditto marks indicate 'Farmer' as occupation. * 77-78 Original ditto marks indicate 'Farmer' as occupation. * 85 Original ditto marks indicate 'Labourer' as occupation. * 93 'Clark' is same as 'Clerk'. * 95-97 Occupation column is blank. * 98-104 Herzberz - possibly misspelled: Herzberg is more common. * 99-104 Occupation column is blank. * 110-114 These passengers traveled in Second Class. * 113 'vd' before surname stands for 'van der'. * 114 First name with superscripted 's' is short for Cornelis or Cornelius * 115 Brill - occupation column is blank Correspondence 10/22/02 passenger #44 Vermouw I was curious about your note on nr. 44 Suzanne Vermouw. I believe that her correct name should be Suzanne Fremouw and that she came from the village of Oostburg in Holand born on 20 okt. 1819. You can check these data yourselves at Immigrants from West Zeeuwsch Vlaanderen to North America - go to F - look for Fremouw. I have (another) Fremouw in my Vasseur Genealogy and have regularly found different spellings of this and other names. Additional correspondence 03/29/2004 I can confirm now that she was married to Isaac Wisse. Suzanna (Maatje) Wisse was their daughter and she was married to Isaac Tiersen. I guess he is your number 41.
