I, H.A.F. Neynaber Master of the N.G. Lloyd SS Rhein do solemnly, sincerely, and truly declare that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of New York is a full and perfect list of all the passengers taken on board of the said Vessel at Bremen via Southampton from which por* said Vessel has now arrived; an* that on said list is truly designated the age, the sex, and the occupation of each of said passengers, the part of the vessel occupied by each during the passage, the country tho? which each belongs, and also the country of which it is intended by each to become an *habitant; an* that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the Number of said passengers who have died on said voyage, and the names and ages of those who died.    America, so that column has been eliminated.

*  The Died on the voyage column has been eliminated, and 
   information listed in the transcriber's notes.

*  Passengers 1 - 10 were listed in First Cabin.
   Passengers 11 - 41 were listed in Second Cabin.
   Passengers 42 - 894 were listed in a combined category of Steerage, 
   Second Cabin, Officers Rooms.  
   Note:  The original recorder classified everyone who was not in 
   First or Second Cabin as Steerage in the Recapitulation which is
   listed at the end of the passenger list.

 4 - 15 There is a large tear and very dark areas on this section of 
        the original manifest.
     17 The last part of the surname is illegible.
     20 Age was written as 2 1/2.
     32 Name was written as Kätchen Küchler, with Kaetchen Kuechler 
        being an alternative spelling. 
     43 Surname was written as Bienmüller, with Bienmueller being an 
        alternative spelling.
     47 Surname is probably Sufell, but could be Sidell. There may be 
        an umlaut over the u in Sufell.
     79 Brickslayer is as spelled by the original recorder.
     90 Brickslayer is as spelled by the original recorder.
     96 Age was written as 9 1/2.
    144 Magdl may be an abbreviation.
    170 Surname was written as Müller, with Mueller being an 
        alternative spelling.

Correspondence 10/22/01 Passenger #151 Laut
Ferdinand Friedrich Ludwig Laut (b 1857 d. 1899) came from New Stetten 
Germany and landed in New York in 1881.  He married Maria Kunde 
(b 1857 d 1941) in Cook County, IL on Sept. 14, 1883.  
Their children were:

Herman F. Laut b 1886 d 1965
William Laut b 1889 d 1966
Anna M. Laut b 1893 d 1940

The steamship RHEIN was built by Caird & Co, Greenock, Scotland, for Norddeutscher Lloyd and launched in August 1868. She had been laid down as the ODER, but was delivered as the RHEIN, to replace the vessel originally laid down as the RHEIN, but sold on the stocks to the Royal Mail Steamship Co, and launched in February 1868 as the NEVA. 2902 tons; 106,1 x 12,22 meters (length x breadth); clipper bow, 1 funnel, 2 masts; iron construction, screw propulsion, service speed 12 knots; accommodation for 70 1st-, 100 2nd-, and 604 steerage-class passengers; crew of 100+. 3 October 1868, maiden voyage, Bremen-Southampton-New York. 1878, engines compounded and new boilers by builders; service speed 13 knots. 18 September 1890, last voyage, Bremen-Baltimore. 1891, sold to Gray, Liverpool. 1892, resold to A. Rimner, Liverpool (register shows Caird's as owner); 1893, sold to Jaeger Brothers, Liverpool.
