Correspondence 5/01/01 passenger #60 Gardler
Thomas Gardler was born June 1834 in the Isle of Sheppy, Minster,
County Kent, England to Zechariah (born 1788) and Mary (born 1796) Gardler.
He was the seventh of nine children. His siblings names were George
born January 1817, Mary born April 1819, Isaac born June 1821, Esther
born June 1823, Alfred born 1828, Marie born 1831, Emma 1836, Jane
born 1838. On the census records for County Kent, England for 1841,
1851, 1861, Thomas is listed as a seven year old boy on the 1841 census
and a 16 year old man, who was living with his brothers Isaac and
Alfred on the 1851 census. However, on the 1861 census he is missing.
The next time he showed up on a census record was the 1900 Federal
Census of Philadelphia, PA. On this census, it states that he immigrated
to the United States at the age of 19, in 1853. He came to the states
by way of North Carolina. He moved around for a while before being
enlisted in the Confederate Army as a part of the Mississippi 21st
infantry. Just prior to his enlistment in the Confederate Army, he
fathered a black child in Morengo County, Alabama. The child's name
was Dick Gardler and he was born April 1862. Dick Gardler is listed
on the 1900 Federal Census of the village of Faunsdale, Morengo County,
Alabama. He was married to a woman named Melvina and had a son named
Jimmie Gardler. Thomas Gardler enlisted in the Confederate Army in
March of 1862 at the age of 27. Family history states that he was
drafted into the Mississippi 21st infantry. He did not volunteer.
He was captured by the Union at the Battle of Fredricksburg on
December 13, 1863. He was held prisoner in Baltimore, Maryland.
When he was set free, to go north as instructed, he chose to go back
to his family in Kent, England. He later returned to the states, but
I was unsure of where or when until I found him as a passenger on the
SS Parana dated September 29, 1870, transcribed by ISTG. He settled
in Philadelphia, PA. where he met Anna Maria Carr (born 1859), my
great great grandmother. They married in 1877. They had five children.
However, the first three children died. Their fourth child was my
great grandfather, Thomas Franklin Gardler born October 1886. Their
fifth child was George Gardler born November 1888.
Thomas Franklin Gardler married Delia Ireland, born November 1886,
in the year 1906 in Pleasantville, Atlantic County, New Jersey.
Thomas Franklin Gardler and Delia Ireland had eight children.
Their sixth child, Harrison Gardler, born March 1917, was my grandfather.
His siblings were Thomas born November 1906, Japhet born October 1909,
Anna born August 1910, Maria born May 1913, George born November 1914,
Verna born July 1919 and Margaret born 1921. Harrison was a decorated
veteran of the second world war. Harrison married Loretta Mullin and
they had five children. Family Tree
