I, Julius Hesse Master of the S.S. Mosel , solemnly, sincerely and truly swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collections District of Newyork* , is a full and perfect list of all the passengers taken on board of the said S.S. Mosel, at Bremen via Southampton from which por* said S.S. has now arrived; and that on said list ??? ???? designated the age, the sex, and the occupation of each of said passengers, the part of the vessel occupied by each during the passage, the country tho* which each belongs, and also the country of which it is intended by each to become an habitant*; an* that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the Number of said passengers who have died on said voyage, and the names and ages of those who died. at the age of 19 and settled in San Jose, California, becoming a prosperous

MOSEL, built in 1872 for Norddeutscher Lloyd (North German Lloyd) by Caird & Co., Greenock, Scotland. 3,200 tons; 349 feet long x 40 feet broad; straight bow, 1 funnel, 2 masts; iron construction, screw propulsion, service speed 13 knots; accommodation for 90 1st-, 126 2nd-, and 600-3rd class passengers. 20 August 1872, launched. 1 April 1873, maiden voyage, Bremen-Southampton-New York. 12 November 1875, bomb explosion in dock at Bremerhaven, killing 128. 1882, compound engines by Elder, Glasgow. 9 August 1882, wrecked near Lizard, Cornwall [Noel Reginald Pixell Bonsor, North Atlantic Seaway; An Illustrated History of the Passenger Services Linking the Old World with the New (2nd ed.; Jersey, Channel Islands: Brookside Publications), vol. 2 (1978), p. 548.
