Excerpts from autobiography of
Fannie Boorn Conley Peacock
Excerpts from autobiography of Fannie Boorn Conley Peacock, written in 1924. Fanny was eight years old when she and her family left Liverpool.
"In the spring of 1853 we sailed from Liverpool for America. We embarked on a three-masted sailing vessel, the Joseph Walker, which was destroyed by fire the next year in New York harbor. There were a thousand * on board besides those in the cabin. We were five weeks on the water, encountered some very heavy storms, so severe that we younger children could not hold ourselves in bed, so father tied us in with ropes. They had to lighten the vessel by throwing the ballast, consisting of railroad iron, overboard. The * s were all kept in the cabin, no one but the seamen allowed on deck. The storm was so severe, one day when we were seated at the table, the vessel lay so far over that the meal, dishes and ourselves all landed on the floor. Soon after that storm was over, we saw two wales.
The Captain wanted to go after them in one of the small boats but the first mate, who was an older man, persuaded him not to. After the storm subsided they had to repair as many of the sails that they could and make new ones to take the place of those that were entirely blown away. It was a pretty sight to see the sailors sitting on the deck sewing. My sister Kate, 14 years old, made a new fly for them. That is a small flag that is flown from the top of the third mast. It was about two yards long and eight or ten inches round.
They found a man hidden among the freight a few days after we left Liverpool. The captain had the box he was hidden in brought on deck and made him get in it, pretending he was going to have him thrown overboard. He, the man, promised if he would not, he would work faithfully to pay his passage, but he would not work. They punished him by handcuffing him to the deck, but when they let him up he would not work. They handcuffed him again and just let his feet touch the deck but anything they could do to him he would not work. The captain would take him back to England on his return voyage".
"When we were nearing New York Harbor, they bedecked the vessel with flags, large ones of England and U.S. and small ones of all nations. The Captain was so good and kind to us children all the voyage over. We saw Mother Carey's chickens on the water. He rigged up poles and lines for us and put us in the life boat that is carried in the stern of the vessel, told us if we could catch any of them he would mount them for us, but we failed to get any, though it passed the time away. He put up swings and hammocks for us".
"When we landed in New York my mother had the misfortune to lose a trunk that contained all her most valued possessions such as silverware and her father's gold snuffbox, ect".
"We went from New York to Albany by steamboat on the Hudson River. We stayed there one night and took the train to Buffalo and remained there one night. We then went by steamboat to Detroit and from there to Chicago by Michigan Southern Railroad, landing in a depot at the foot of Randolph Street".
Fanny's autobiography continues and covers a cholera epidemic while living across from Camp Douglas (Chicago, IL) during the Civil War and a Smallpox epidemic amongst the solders, various homes she and Robert Peacock shared and her nine children. Fanny died at the age of 81 years of pneumonia.
The Joseph Walker was built in 1850, a two-decker of 1325 tons launched for Samuel Thompson and the Black Star line. She burned on 28 DEC 1853 in the Great Republic fire. Master William E. Hoxie.
