Correspondence 4/20/01 Captain Goodday
I have discovered that my gr. great grandfather was Captain of the
Ship John Jay.
He lived in New York City. He is listed in NYC directories that I have
reviewed on microfilm. The earliest entry I have found is 1807 where he
is listed as "mariner." The same entry continues until 1813 when he is
listed as "Shipmaster." He is listed each year as Shipmaster even in
the 1837-1838 directory. He died on a voyage in 1837 in Trieste.
I discovered the place of his death from the work copied and compiled
by Gertrude A. Barber , "New York Evening Post New York City Deaths,"
in this book I found the following entry "March last in Trieste,
Capt. James Goodday of this City," (issue of NY Evening Post of
Wednesday, May 3, 1837). Therefore, James Goodday died in Trieste
in March 1837.
Letters of administration were filed in New York County. These were
granted and received on July 18, 1837, (Liber 36, Page 215, Book 32).
In this document are named his widow Phebe Goodday, his sons
James Goodday Jr., and William H. Goodday.
