Transcriber's Notes:
This was marked a City List.

#2-3 there seem to be ditto marks in the occupation column for these 2,
indicating merchant, same as first passenger, but not certain.
#15 about 5 or 6 letters in question, most extend to only mid-point above
the line, except 1 letter near the end of name that could be l or t perhaps.
#16-17 town names spelled as found, but probably the same for the 2 passengers.
 #19 town possibly spelled Holshausen.
#27 print too light to read middle initial. Age could be 6 months or 1y6mo.
 #29 middle initial probably P.
#33 surname possibly Buerbrauer, but cannot be certain.
 #40 middle initial probably P.
#42-46 town name could be spelled Dermbeck.
 #51 middle initial probably D.
#55-60 town name could be same as for #42-46, but spelled differently here.
#61-65 town name could be Grunebach.
#71 town name could be spelled Schonstein, umlaut over o.
#73 surname possibly Hirsch or Husch.
 #73-74 town possibly spelled Elkenroth.
#75-80 town unclear, something like Englen or Engler or Engsen or
     Engter but uncertain.
#79 middle initial could be F or T, but not certain.
#88 first initial possibly S, not certain.
#98 town something like Merbau or Menlau or Menlan or variation.

Correspondence 10/29/00 Passengers #23-27

Passengers 23-27 were the John Gerlach Bruehl family from Herdorf, Rhineland. They were pioneers of the Lake Creek settlement in southeastern Pettis County, Missouri. During the Civil War, John G. Bruehl and son Christian were members of adjoining Benton County's "German Regiment" Home Guards, and participants in the Battle of Cole Camp, Missouri on 19 June 1861. If you are researching this family, visit us at

More correspondence 03/05/2003 Passengers #23-27 Bruehl See link below for letter contributed. I will accept your knowledge of the true date of the letter as 1836. The original letters were in the hands of one Carl Heribert Bruehl of Herdorf, Germany. He was a descendant of Joh. Gerlach's brother, Joh. Peter Bruehl. Carl wrote to me that the letters were extremely brittle, even too brittle to make photcopies of them. So, he apparently had typed the letters out on an old typewriter. What a painstaking task. Carl sent to me the original typed copies that he made from the letters. So, it's entirely possible he made an error in typing the date for the first letter home. G. Leisen
