Transcriber's ancestors - Bather Family Passengers #341 - #343 Penny Sabin My 2nd great grandfather, John R. Bather, born Nov. 7, 1828 England and his 1st wife Mary (Moody) Bather (listed as age 20 on the Ship London). They were married May 1, 1850 (age on certificate is 31)at Manchester Cathedral in England and left immediately for America. Sadly, Mary became ill on the voyage and was probably quarantined on arrival. She is buried at the Marine Quarantine Cemetery, Staten Island, New York (age listed on burial record as 30). John's father was Thomas Bather born May 5, 1799 Llangedwynand, Wales (the Welsh Marches area); his mother Agness Kellet was born Oct. 14, 1799. John's grandparents were Richard Badda (born 1751 Llangedwyn) and Mary (the Welsh "dd" is pronounced "th"); great grandparents were Andrew Badda (born 1708 Llangedwyn) and Jane. Gardeners by trade, the Bathers are on the 1850 Albany NY Federal Census living on the Stephen Van Rensselaer Estate (probably employed as gardeners for the estate). In 1858, John married Jane M. Sipperly at Troy, New York and shortly afterward the entire Bather family moved to Iowa. John and his brother, Andrew Bather, operated a florist business with large greenhouses for 30 years, becoming one of the leading florists in Iowa. As members of the Underground Railroad, their properties were frequently used as hiding places for fugitive slaves before going by boat across the Mississippi River and on to Canada. John and Jane Bather had twelve children. John died 1893 and Jane died three years later, both buried at Clinton, Iowa. John's mother, Agness Bather and two of his siblings (Andrew and Mary) arrived on this ship. Wife Mary and John are listed on the Ship London We are still searching for the ship with John's father Thomas Bather onboard, probably 1848/1849. Photo link: John R. Bather family Correspondence 6/30/00 passenger #302 Bernard Carroll, who arrived in New York aboard the Ship Isaac Wright on June 21, 1849 was my great grandfather. He was born in Castletown, County Laois (then Queens), Ireland in 1821. He settled in New York City and first lived at 26 1/2 Spruce Street near City Hall. His occupation in City directories of that period is shown variously as "porter" and "clerk". He became a naturalized citizen of the U.S. on October 5, 1863. Bernard's mother, Mary Dunn Carroll, arrived in New York in 1851 at the age of 72. His brother William, sisters Mary and Hanorah and nephew John F. Tynan also emigrated to New York at about this time but I have not yet determined ships and dates. Sometime between 1851 and 1855, Bernard married Bridget Burke who had also arrived in the U.S. in 1849 (I have not been able to determine whether this is the passenger Bridget Burk shown arriving on the Issac Wright passenger 252). They had seven children, three of whom died in infancy. In 1877, Bernard established a coal, coke and firewood business with premises at 426 East 14th Street, 244 First Avenue and 316-322 Avenue A, all on the east side of Manhattan not far from the families then residence at 323 East 12th Street. Bernard died on September 15, 1890 and is buried in Calvary Cemetery, Queens, with his wife, mother, brother, sisters, the three children who died in infancy and his nephew. Bernard C. Carroll Correspondence 8/12/00 passengers 354 & 398
John and George Huntingdon, passengers 354 and 398 on the Ship Isaac Wright, blacksmiths, were sons of Thomas Huntingdon and Elizabeth Bothroyd of Thorpe Auldin, Yorkshire, England. John was born on 2/1798. He married Sarah Ingle on 3/24/1823 in the parish of Badsworth, Yorkshire, and they had 6 children. After her death in 1837, he married Margaret Willet in the parish of Kirk Smeaton, Yorkshire, on 2/24/1838 and they had 6 children. John and Margaret arrived in New York with 6 of the 11 children that were born in England. They made their way to Orion Township, Oakland Co. MI, were they appear as farmers in the 1850 census. Their children eventually dispersed through out the mid Michigan area, most of them as farmers. John died 11/15/1886 and Margaret followed him on 12/22/1887. John is the gr. gr. grand father of the wife of the contributor of this article. George married Sarah Mounteer on 12/24/1832 in the parish of Bradford, Yorkshire and they had 10 children, 8 of whom were born in England. After their arrival in New York, they went to Port Hope, Durham, Ontario Canada, where as least 2 of Sarah's brothers were living. George first appears in 1850, in the 1803 -1851 indices for Port Hope, Ontario Canada. Their children lived in the same general area of Ontario. George died on 10/24/1892 and Sarah followed him on 6/03/1890. They were living in Hamilton Township, Northumberland, Ontario, Canada at the time. This Huntingdon name was also spelled as Huntington in official documents in England and the United States. Eventually, it became Huntington. Benjamin L. Kinsey Family Home Page Correspondence 08/11/02 passengers #429-438 Greaves Although I am not related to the parents, John & Jane, several of their children have married into my ancestral family. The entire family settled in the area of Maidstone, Ontario, Canada, to which I grew up, and most of my family roots are based. Parents, John & Jane, as well as many of their children, are buried in the same cemetery as the majority of my ancestors (North Ridge Cemetery, near Essex, Ontario). I have extensive information on this family, and would like to share it with anyone else interested. Click here Biographical record part 1 and Biographical record part 2 for their son, John Greaves (who is 6 at the time of immigration). John married my great-great-grand aunt, Louisa Collins. He later became well-known in his community, and served as the Reeve for the Township of Sandwich South. I have information on 8 of the surviving children (11 children total, 3 of whom died in infancy). Heidi Farough
