For many years I have wondered just who accompanied my grandmother on her trip to the states, so I was overjoyed to find the family listed starting with number 233 on the SS Herman. I didn't know what port they left from or where they disembarked. My grandmother, Caroline was only four years old when the family left the Bohemian town of Horitz, a town that is now in the Czech republic. It is interesting that at that age she was called Caroline (my middle name) and later Lena and then Helena. The family traveled to Minnesota where her father, a mine foreman in Horitz, tried farming. He either rented or bought a farm in a very hilly area which was not too great for farming and there one son lost an arm in an accident. The family ended up in St. Paul, Minnesota. One of her brother's, John Beer was a musician and started some instrumental groups in the area. John evidently preceded the family to the US. Caroline married in 1900 and had two sons. My grandfather was 14 years her senior and a Lutheran while her family was Catholic. His name was Hugo Middlestaedt (not the same spelling as on earlier certificates). He and a partner owned two businessmen's bars in downtown St Paul until prohibition hit. I am now on a search to find out when and where he arrived from Germany. I want to express my appreciation for all the time and patience it must take to transcribe these lists. Thanks much Marion Middlestaedt Platten
