Transcriber's notes:

* An asterisk indicates an error on the part of the original
recorder, not the transcriber, or is used to call your
attention to additional information in the transcriber's
   notes.

? The ? marks indicate letters or words that cannot be read
due to the quality of the original document.

* The sworn statement from the Port of Baltimore precedes
the sworn statement and passenger list from the Port of
New York. The ship may have arrived at New York, with some
or all of the passengers disembarking, then continued on
to Baltimore. The transcriber has included both statements
   by date.

* The Port of New York sworn statement was faded in places,
which made some words illegible. Parts of the statement
were off the edge of the copy.

* The intended destination or location of all passengers was
listed as U.S., so that column has been eliminated.

* One passenger died on the voyage. That column has been
eliminated and the information included in the transcriber's
   notes.

* The Transient or in transit, or intending protracted sojourn
column has been eliminated, except for Cabin passengers. To
conserve space, the information which was recorded in this
column for two steerage passengers has been listed in the
   transcriber's notes.

* Baggage amounts were listed with the first person of each
   group or family.

* Each page of the original manifest has a recap of adults and
children by country of citizenship and a recap of passengers
by age and gender. Although some of this information is off
the edge of the copy, the remainder has been included.

Correspondence Februaury 28, 2002 passengers #233-239 BEER

For many years I have wondered just who accompanied my grandmother on her trip to the states, so I was overjoyed to find the family listed starting with number 233 on the SS Herman. I didn't know what port they left from or where they disembarked. My grandmother, Caroline was only four years old when the family left the Bohemian town of Horitz, a town that is now in the Czech republic. It is interesting that at that age she was called Caroline (my middle name) and later Lena and then Helena. The family traveled to Minnesota where her father, a mine foreman in Horitz, tried farming. He either rented or bought a farm in a very hilly area which was not too great for farming and there one son lost an arm in an accident. The family ended up in St. Paul, Minnesota. One of her brother's, John Beer was a musician and started some instrumental groups in the area. John evidently preceded the family to the US. Caroline married in 1900 and had two sons. My grandfather was 14 years her senior and a Lutheran while her family was Catholic. His name was Hugo Middlestaedt (not the same spelling as on earlier certificates). He and a partner owned two businessmen's bars in downtown St Paul until prohibition hit. I am now on a search to find out when and where he arrived from Germany. I want to express my appreciation for all the time and patience it must take to transcribe these lists. Thanks much Marion Middlestaedt Platten
