SS Gellert

I, W. Reildeman, Master of the German SS Gellert do solemnly, sincerely and truly swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of New York, is a full and perfect list of all the passengers taken on board of the said Gellert at Hamburg, Havre from which port said Gellert has now arrived; and that on said list is truly designated the age, the sex, and the occupation of each of said passengers, the part of the vessel occupied by each during the passage, the country to which each belongs, and also the country of which it is intended by each to become an inhabitant; and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of said passengers who have died on said voyage, and the names and ages of those who died. Transcriber's notes:

? represents letters or words that could not be read accurately.

All passengers intended to inhabit the United States so I've 
eliminated that column to save space.

I have eliminated the Death column to save space even though 
there were three deaths on the voyage.  Passengers 125, 403, 
and 544 died en route.  There were two births on the voyage as 
noted on page 4 of this transcription.

On the original manifest, Cabin passengers were numbered separately 
from Steerage passengers.  For ease in referring to transcriber's 
notes, I've numbered all passengers as one group.

  1 and 2 Georg and Rudolf Schmidt - The occupation is not written

Though the name is spelled PIPLOW on the passenger list, the
family usually spelled it PIEPLOW.

Johann Heinrich Christian Theodor PIEPLOW was born 9 Apr 1850 in
Tressentin, Mecklenburg-Schwerin; he died 10 Jan 1933 in
Danbury, Ottawa County, Ohio; buried there in St Paul's
Cemetery. He was a farmer, according to the 1910 census, he had
a fruit farm.

His first wife was Johanne Henriette Wilhelmine Christiane GEIST
(known as "Minna"), born 30 Sep 1852 in Allerstorf,
Mecklenburg-Schwerin; died 27 Aug 1882 in Ottawa County, Ohio;
buried there in Christy Chapel Cemetery. A second child was born
in August 1881 and died the following February.

In 1883 John (as he was known in Ohio) married a widow with
three children; they went on to have four more children of their
own.
  
The child listed as an 11-month old boy named Friedrich was
actually a 17-month old girl named Ida. She later changed her
name to "Edith". She was born 7 Nov 1878 in
Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany; died 28 Apr 1954 in Port Clinton,
Ottawa County, Ohio. She married on 9 Mar 1904 in Toledo, Lucas
County, Ohio, Anton Meinrad BAHNSEN.  They were my
great-grandparents.
