DISTRICT OF NEW YORK - PORT OF NEW YORK
I, H. Hillmers, Master of the Steamship Eider, do solemnly, sincerely and
truly declare that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now
delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District
of the City of New York, is a full and perfect list of all the passengers
taken on board of the said Steamship at Bremen and Southhampton from which
port said Steamship has now arrived; and that on said list is truly
designated the age, the sex and the calling of each of said passengers, the
location of the compartment or space occupied by each during the passage,
the country of citizenship of each, and also the destination or location
intended by each; and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number
of said passengers who have died on said voyage, and the dates and the names
and ages of those who died; also of the pieces of baggage of each; also a
true statement so far as can be ascertained, with reference to the intention
of each aline passenger as to a protracted sojurn in this country. So

below). The last column lists mostly cities but does not identify if that
is the passengers residence or place of origination or what.

Correspondence 2/25/02 passenger #732 Osterwald
I have found a relative on your shiplists, on SS Eider arrived May 22, 1886
from Bremen in New York. Passenger No. 732 is Friedrich Osterwald, age 17.
Friedrich Wilhelm Osterwald was born 1869 in Enger, Westfalen, Germany. He
was the son of Johann Hermann Osterwald and Auguste Amalie Hackmann. He is
the brother of my greatgrandfather Carl Friedrich Wilhelm Osterwald. I
don't know where he went or if he had children, but I would like to find
out and I have plenty of information about his ancestors to share.
