Ship Christel
I, Franz Friedrichs, Master of the Bremen ship Christel do solemnly, sincerely and truly swear that the following List or Manifest subscribed by me and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the District of New York is a full and perfect list of all the passengers taken on board of the said ship Christel at Bremen from which port said ship has now arrived; and that on said list is truly designated the age, the sex, and the occupation of each of said passengers, the part of the vessel occupied by each during the passage, the country to which each belongs and also the country of which it is intended by each to become an inhabitant and that said list or manifest truly sets forth the number of said passengers who have died on said voyage and the names and ages of those who died. Sworn to this 24 July 1867 Franz Friedrichs, Captain Before me, ? (name of port authority indeciperable)
List or Manifest of all the Passengers taken on board the Bremen Ship Christel, Franz Friedrichs is Master, from Bremen, burthen (no tonnage recorded).
Columns represent: names, ages, gender, country of origin--other columns have been omitted in this transcription because the information was the same for all passengers, i.e. the intended country of habitation was the U.S. for all. Passengers 1-4 travelled in the first cabin; 5-90 in the second cabin (or identified as poop deck); 91-432 were between decks, otherwise known as steerage.

He also draws in a vertical bracket to indicate the nationality of groups of people rather than entering the country on each line; therefore, there may be misreadings of the nationality for some names. Passenger #1 Occupation probably "grocer" #3 Surname has an umlaut over the "u" and the "o" #13 Given name blurred because of a fold or tear in original manuscript. Surname has an umlaut over the "o" #14 Name and age blurred because of fold or tear in original--seems to be the same surname as #13 because of ditto marks in the column for nationality. Age may be 35. #13-18 Surnames have an umlaut over the "o" #24 Occupation possibly steel maker #28-31 Surname has an umlaut over the "u" #30 Passenger died "in the passage" that is, on the voyage #32 Surname has an umlaut over the "u" #37-38 Surname could be Setter #47 Occupation probably means brewer #51 Occupation probably should read--miller #54 Occupation proabably means trimmer, as in cabinetry or carpentry #56 Occupation could mean teacher #58 Occupation probably chemist #60 Surname blurred by a fold or tear in original, could be Kochtz #64 Surname has an umlaut over the "o" #82 The given name and the surname seem to be transposed here: I believe the surname is Heinemann and the given name, Phavis-- difficult to determine because the first letter is overwritten from the name above. #83 Both given and surname have been overwritten--difficult to decipher. The surname seems to end in ... dluck or ...llack and again the surname and given name seem to have been transposed. #94-97 Surname may have an umlaut over the "u" #142 Gender seems to be incorrect #146-148 Surname has an umlaut over the "u" #165 Surname could be Wicka #167-168 Surname could be Navia or Navea #177 Age of child has a line over the 8--unclear whether that has any meaning. #198-200 Surname could be Holaeck #204 No family designation given, but probably should be daughter #224 Gender designation seems to be incorrect #228-230 Country is listed as Germany, but previous Schindlers are listed as Austria and these next three are listed as their children. #240 Given name has been overwritten--seems to be Carl #246-248 Surname has an umlaut over the "u" #275 Surname could be Golobisch #279 Surname has an umlaut over the "o" #314 Gender seems to be incorrect on this entry #315 Age is blurred may be 3 or 8 #344-345 Relatives of the transcriber of this list, Gene Janssen. #344 Catharine Renken eventually married passenger #43 Melchior (Janssen) Eden and they settled in Jones Co., Iowa, later in Plymouth Co., IA. #352 Surname has an umlaut over the "u" #353 Surname could be Hannlein #364 Surname may have an umlaut over the "a" #365 First letter of surname unclear--could be Heiller, Keiller, Meiller #391 Surname could be Gocvater #402 Surname has an umlaut over the "o" #421 Surname may be Fralnick or Frasnick #430 Surname has an umlaut over the "u" #431 Surname either has an umlaut over the "u" or it is Wierskock or Weirskock #432 Noted as "died in passage" Above the word female for gender is the word "sukling" probably meaning a "suckling" i.e. a nursing child. There is no one with this surname on the ship--possibly should have been Temme. Summary page has the following information: Cabin 4 Steerage 424 Total: 428 men 246 women 178 children 62 babies 20 Deaths 2 U.S. 3 Germany 421 Total 424 (not counting 1st cabin)
