Transcriber's Notes:
The pages on this film are not numbered so finding a particular ship can be difficult.
However, there appears to be a system of numbering the manifests. These numbers are
included in the identification of the film and reel numbers below.
Question marks replace difficult to read entries.
For passengers bound for San Francisco, passengers' names and ages are followed by a stamp
that varies depending on the disposition of the passenger and which is stamped over whatever
information has been entered in the columns.
Passengers allowed to land have the following stamp:
Landed Collectors order (blank with a month and day date written in) 1894 by Insp's (blank
for a name, in this case Grant). Many of these passengers have a place name written under
the stamp. Where a blank is transcribed in this column no place has been written in. Where
there is a question mark the entry is illegible.
Passengers not allowed to land have one of two different stamps:
Refused Habeas Corpus U.S.D.C. Case followed by a number. These passengers were probably
allowed to land, but not to freely enter the country. The National Archives should have
a file for these passengers describing what happened to them.
Refused Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date).
For passengers bound for a further port there are two possible dispositions:
Landed "I.T." Transit List followed by a number
Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date)
The following columns had no entries and are not included in the table:
Height
Complexion
Color of Eyes
Physical Marks or Peculiarities and Facts of Identification
The No of Ticket column was added and the No of Certificate heading was altered by the
completer to read No of US Consul Certificate.
Occupation for passengers 1-56 is Cal Int Mid-Winter Exhibition. For the remaining male
passengers it is Grocer. Occupation is universally recorded as Merchant or Grocer because
following the Chinese Exclusion Act of May 6, 1882 admission was denied to all Chinese
except laborers already in the US and "students, teachers, merchants or those proceeding
to the United States from curiosity." All male passengers , except those going to the
Fair, are listed as Grocer, except as noted.
Last Place of Residence entries have been stamped over and are difficult to read. They
were written in only for passengers bound for San Francisco (and not to the Fair). They
have been replaced by "Havana by rail" or "Havana by str" for passengers as noted below.
There is a note at the bottom of the page:
#1/55 Blue Tickets and stamped "For Mid-Winter Fair."
1/36 Red Tickets 1st 31/32 stamped "For Mid-Winter Fair."
29 Name could be May, Way or Hay.
56 is recorded as a 1st Cabin Pass.
58,60-61,69-70,78-84, 89-90,92 are described as "for Havana by rail:"
73-76 are described as "for Havana by str."
71 is female.
86 is female.
93 is recorded as a 1st Cabin Pass and a Merchant.
