The pages on this film are not numbered so finding a particular ship can be difficult.
However, there appears to be a system of numbering the manifests. These numbers are
included in the identification of the film and reel numbers below.
For passengers bound for San Francisco, passengers' information is followed by a stamp
that varies depending on the disposition of the passenger.
Passengers allowed to land have the following stamp:
Landed Collectors order (blank with a month and day date written in) 1894 by Insp's (blank
for a name, in this case Grant).
Passengers not allowed to land have one of two different stamps:
Refused Habeas Corpus U.S.D.C. Case followed by a number. These passengers were probably
allowed to land, but not to freely enter the country. The National Archives should have
a file for these passengers describing what happened to them.
Refused Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date).
For passengers bound for a further port there are two possible dispositions:
Landed "I.T." Transit List followed by a number
Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date)
No of Certificate is replaced by the completer with No of Ticket.
The information recorded for the passengers varied. Passengers for the Fair were the only
ones for whom the personal description columns were completed. These passengers were all
recorded as having Yellow Complexion and Dark Eyes. The infomation for Physical Marks
or Peculiarities and Facts of Identification was often recorded on more than one line per
passenger. It is difficult to determine how to assign this information to the various
passengers. It is transcribed on the lines as it was written, with an attempt to assign
it to the passnegers. It is possible that an extra line actually referred to the passenger
below or above the line it is writen on.
For passengers bound for the US, Occupation is universally recorded as Merchant or Grocer
because following the Chinese Exclusion Act of May 6, 1882 admission was denied to all
Chinese except laborers already in the US and "students, teachers, merchants or those
proceeding to the United States from curiosity."
If accredited oficers of Chinese Government, state facts is not recorded for visitors
to the Fair.
Passengers for Havana are recorded as going by Rail if they have an "I.T." Transit List
number and by steamer for the rest.
18 was landed by Inspector O'Leary not Grant.
28 has a second name recorded "or H. Luquin."
29 is listed as a Cabin passenger.
86 & 95-97 The Occupation of these passengers is "Cash and Errand Boy."
126-128 Height and Complexion are recorded for these passengers:
126 5'4½", Brown
127 4'11¾", Brown
128 4'11¾", Brown
