I, W H Walker, Master of the SS Belgic do solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of San Francisco, is a full and perfect list of all Chinese passengers taken on board the said vessel at Hong Kong from which port said vessel has now arrived, or that have been taken on board the said vessel at any foreign port or place, and of all such passengers now on board said vessel, and that on said List is truly designated the names and other particulars, as shown by their respective certificates.So help me God. Transcriber's Notes:
The arrival date on this list differs by one day from that on the non-Chinese list.
The pages on this film are not numbered so finding a particular ship can be difficult.
However, there appears to be a system of numbering the manifests. These numbers are
included in the identification of the film and reel numbers below.
Passengers' names and ages are followed by a stamp that varies depending on the disposition
of the passenger and which is stamped over whatever information has been entered in the
columns.
Passengers allowed to land have one of the following stamps:
Landed Collectors order (blank with a month and day date written in) 1893 by
Insp's (blank for a name, in this case Grant).
Landed "I.T." Transit List followed by a number. These passengers are bound for a
further port.
Passengers not allowed to land have one of two different stamps:
Habeas Corpus U.S.D.C. Case followed by a number. These passengers were probably allowed
to land, but not to freely enter the country.
Refused Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date).
Column Titles:
Passengers for San Francisco with certificates have an additional columm after
Certificate No. This column has no heading and is called Unidentified above. Some of the
entries appear to be dates, perhaps the date on the certificate. Others are just numbers,
again perhaps the number on the certificate.
Passengers for San Francisco without certificates and those bound elsewhere have no
entries of this sort.
Sex is not among the column titles printed on the page but has been added for some
passengers.
Occupation for all passengers is Grocer; Last Residence is China.
Height, Complexion, Color of Eyes, Physical Marks or Peculiarities and Facts of
Identification were not completed for any passengers.
45-46 The entries in the Unidentified column are illegible but appear to be numbers, not
dates.
54 European Steward passenger is written in the last column.
55 Cabin Passenger is written in the last column.
65 "no date" is written in the Unidentifed column.
124 is with his uncle #55.
139 is with his uncle #65
141 third name is probably Lue.
178-184 Salina Cruz is in Mexico.
185-193 Certificate numbers have been cut off the edge of the page in filming. 185
number is ?1, 186 is ?3, 187 is ?0. There could be more that one digit
represented by those question marks.
