Transcriber's Notes:
This voyage of the R.M.S. Aurania carried 500 passengers to America.
The first 202 on the list appear here. The balance of the transcription
will be completed soon.
* Column five, "The country of which they are Citizens," was not used and
has been deleted.
* In column six, the word "Compartment" which follows each No1, No2, etc.,
has been deleted to save space.
* Column eleven, "Date and Cause of Death," has been deleted also, as there
were no deaths among passengers 1-202.
** In all cases, the word "Jno" is written on the line; it was commonly used
as an abbreviation for John, although some believe it to be the abbreviation
for Jonathan.
** In all cases, the word "Mrs." is written with an uppercase "M" superscript
"rs" with a line beneath.
? indicates letters or words that cannot be read due to the quality of the
original document, or the abbreviated spelling of names.
#13, 15, "th" is in superscript; abbreviation for Elizabeth.
#16, 20, "t" is in superscript; abbreviation for Margaret.
#19, 42, 68, 78, 111, "m" is in superscript; abbreviation for William.
#29, "Robt." all letters written on the line, usually an abbreviation for
Robert.
#31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, surname could be Colbick or Colbisk.
#41, "fr" is in superscript; abbreviation for Christopher.
#39, 44, 101, 186, "Chas" with all letters written on the line (not
superscripted) is probably the abbreviation for Charles.
#50, 64, 69, 80, "s" is in superscript; abbreviation for Thomas.
#54, "k" is in superscript; abbreviation for Frederick.
#60, letters are all witten on the line, such as u, m, n, etc.; name could
be Furman or Finman, etc.
#62, the name is written Nutt, a small break in the writing, then two letters
that could be "ll", or "lo" with the top of the "o" left somewhat open.
#91, "Cath" is written all on the line, probably abbreviation for Catherine.
#96, "m" is in superscript; abbreviation for William. Surname is either
Diwart or Dewart.
#97, surname is either Diwart or Dewart.
#112, 113, 114, the word "cavor" could be caver. At the bottom of the page,
below passenger #134, in a different handwriting from the rest of the
list, are the words "3 Cattlemen". I believe this refers to these three
passengers.
#113, 114, "Jas" written with all letters on the line is commonly used as an
abbreviation for James.
#122, possibly could be Suygg, but final stroke on the last letter goes up on
the left.
#126, could be Rikstrim or Rikstrom.
#154, the final "r" in Persdtr is in superscript.
#156, letter could be an "f" or a "t". The downward stroke appears to go
slightly below the line but not as far below as the second (and definite)
"f". There is a small break after the "d" and "Son" is written clearly
with an uppercase "S".
#161 name could be Ludn or Ludu.
#170, "h" is in superscript with a dot beneath.
#192, name could be Agnu, Agnw or Agna.
#193, 194, letter after "V" could be a lowercase "l" followed by a period,
an "lo",or a "tr". In surname, letter could be a "q" or a "g" as the
downward stroke ends below the line without a final upstroke to the
right or the left.
#197, could be Schentz or Schartz.
#199-202 could be Heggedalin or Higgidalin.
#202, the first name clearly appears to be Maret, but the possibility that it
could be Marie should be considered since that is the mother's name, which
also is written clearly.
