DISTRICT OF THE CITY OF NEW YORK – PORT OF NEW YORK
I, B. Chavilier Master of the SS Zaandam do solemnly, sincerely
and truly swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and
now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District
of the City of New York, is a full and perfect list of all the passengers
taken on board the said vessel at Amsterdam from which port said vessel has
now arrived; and that on said list is truly designated the age, the sex, and
the calling of each of said passengers, the location of the compartment or
space occupied by each during the passage, the country of citizenship of each,
and also the destination or location intended by each; and that said List or
Manifest truly sets forth the number of said passengers who have died on said
voyage, and the dates and causes of death, and the names and ages of those who
died; also of the pieces of baggage of each; and also a true statement, so far
as it can be ascertained, with reference to the intention of each alien passenger
as to a protracted sojourn in this country. So help me God. Sworn to this

On the top right of the manifest is written:

(which equal total passengers & then the addition of the Saloon passengers)

Transcriber's Notes:
There were no deaths recorded on this list of passengers.
There was no information given in the column: Transient or in transit
or intending protracted sojourn.
The writer of this manifest made his small "m's & n's" to look like
"i's or u's". It was difficult at times to determine what the letter was.
The writer also did not cross his little "t's".
* Passengers:
36 & 37 - names are missing because of a rip in the manifest. I believe
they are members of the Hofstede family.
38 to 40 - I believe these children belong to the Hofstede family
because of ditto marks and wavy lines drawn in other columns.
43 Mersma - the occupation, Saylor, was spelt this way on the manifest.
It had the same S as in Smith and it was not a T.
48 Sterkenburg - the occupation looks like Cark. (?)
87 A??dr?? Poelstra - parts of the first name and all of the last name
are missing because of a tear in the manifest paper, but I believe
the last name to be Poelstra.
123 Dutch - first name, Hed, has the "ed" raised & underlined twice.
138 to 141 - Haas - these children's names started a new page on the
manifest. I believe the writer errored when he wrote male dep.
It should have been fam dep.
217 Harbers - the occupation looks like Cork. It may be Cook, but the
second "o" is not clear.
233 Krames - the occupation looks like Cork. It may be Cook, but the
second "o" is not clear.
? Passengers:
21 Goldus??a - ? letters do not go below the line or are they tall
letters. Name could be Goldusuia, Golduswa, Goldusina, Goldusma.
54 ?rientje - name could be Frientje or Trientje.
69 B???rtje Hei?s - ? letters on the first name do not go below the
line or are they tall letters. Name could be Bunrtje, Biuirtje,
Bimrtje, Buurtje.
69 to 72 - Hei?s - name could be Heins or Heius.
71 Do???es Hei?s - first name could be Douwes, Donwes, Domves, Douives.
78 & 79 - Bo???a - name could be Bouma, Bonnia, Bonma.
91 Sla?g??eld - name could be Slangweld, Slangeveld, Slaugweld, Slaugeveld.
103 ?a?geler - name could be Faugeler, Fangeler, Tangeler, Taugeler.
130 Kopfha??er - name could be Kopfhamer, Kopfhaiuer, Kopfhauier.
131 Bru??berge? - name could be Bruinberger, Bruinbergen, Brumbergen,

153 ?ober - the ? letters of his first and last name are the same. It
could be G or S. Gene Gober or Sene Sober.

191 Muller - first name may be just Ph. or Phi. The "i" is very faint.
218 Klemparkou?? - the writer tried to squeeze in this name & just made
squiggles for the ending letter or letters.
236 ?olling - name could be Solling or Golling.

I thought you might be interested to know that I have discovered that my
partner's ancestors/family are the very first passengers 1 - 7 on your list
(proper surname spelling shown):

J.F. (Jan) was a weaver, and Hendrikje a dressmaker. My partner's maternal
grandfather Charley Scheltens (whom he is named after), is a son of this
family born in Minnesota in 1887, 4 years after their arrival. The family
had settled in Chippewa County, Minnesota, and the descendents married into
Norwegian and Danish families there. Charlie's branch subsequently ended up
in Alberta and British Columbia, Canada.
Online, I have found some history and illustrations of the Zaandam - in all
of it's incarnations, including the modern-day Holland America cruise ship,
MS Zaandam III, built in 2000.
Not sure if you are aware, but this particular ship, the first SS Zaandam
(built 1882), went through 2 subsequent owners after Holland America and
was used as a cargo ship. She was renamed first the "Styria" and finally
the "Julia Luckenbach". She sunk in Chesapeake Bay in 1913 after a
collision with the British ship SS Indrakuala, and remains a dive site.
