Correspondence:
8/21/99- updated 1/4/00
#253 passenger is BOBENRIETH, Lina. She received her passport
just weeks before this voyage, leaving behind her son to come at a later
date. She entered at New York but I lost track of her after that.
Possibly joining her brothers in Colorado. She was born 28 Dec 1841 in
Ranspach, Haut-Rhin, France, the daughter of Jean & Elisabeth (Kessler)
Bobenrieth. She had a son Thiebaut Bobenrieth (1861-?) that came to the
US ten years later. They are both listed in the books "Germans to America".
Dave Bobenrieth

Correspondence 04/04/2003 passengers #143-145 Bohlinger
Passengers 143, 144, and 145, Peter and Caroline Bohlinger, and their son,
Peter (who was nine months old upon arrival), settled in Manhattan, NY,
and had two additional children, Mary and Josephine. It's rumored that
Peter, Sr., disliked the US and returned to his ancestral homeland. Caroline
Bohlinger remained in New York, where she worked as a nurse and midwife.
She later moved to the Bronx, where she died in the 1930s. For additional
family info, feel free to contact me. Cats Eye56

Correspondence added November 17, 2005, Passenger 232, MATHIAS

Regarding "Passenger #232 Rheinert Mathias 27 M Farmer German*" Arrived New York June 28, 1866, aboard SS William Penn, sailing from London via Havre: This was my great-grandfather (Mathias Reinhart Sr.), 1840-1898. Born near Trier, Germany, he married Magdalena Melchior of Schwemlingen, Germany. She came to the U.S. with her parents and brother a few months after he did. They settled in Ahnapee (now Algoma), Wisconsin. He was a shoemaker. According to the 1880 U.S. Census (1880 Census Place: Ahnapee, Kewaunee, Wisconsin, Family History Library Film 1255431, NA Film Number T9-1431, Page Number 167C), they were then living in Ahnapee (Algoma), Wisconsin, with their 7 children ages 13 to 6 months, an orphaned niece and nephew, an apprentice shoemaker and a shoemaker. An article in the Algoma Record Herald on August 25, 1966, recognizes 100 years of the Reinhart family in Algoma. It says, "Mathias Reinhart came from a family that originally located in France where the name was spelled "Reinard" or "Reinert". He was left an orphan at the age of 14 and worked at the shoemaking trade with his older brother, Peter, until 21 years of age, when he entered the German army. He served three years. After his discharge he married Magdalena Melchior and resumed his shoemaking until 1866, when war broke out between Prussia and Austria and he was called into the Prussian army as a reserve. A month later he obtained a six-day furlough, but he extended his leave of absence and made his way across France and the Atlantic to America, landing in New York on the evening of (sic) July 3, 1866. The following day, “The Fourth”, was celebrated and made quite an impression on young Reinhart. Stories have it that when Reinhart embarked at Le Havre, France, for America, he had but two or three cents left. He flung them into the ocean; it is said, as an offering to Dame Fortune. By steamer he journeyed to Ahnapee (Algoma), Wisconsin, where he obtained employment in the shoe shop of his brother-in-law, Mathias Melchior, who came to the U.S. in 1859."
