Stedinger
I, F. Ammermann do solemnly, sincerely and truly Swear that the following List or Manifest of Passengers, subscribed with my name, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs for the District of New York contains to the best of my knowledge and belief, a just and true account of all the Passengers received on board the Stedinger whereof I am Master from Bremen. So help me God Sworn to the 8 May 1855 before me H. (? name indecipherable)
List, or Manifest of all the Passengers taken on board the Stedinger whereof F. Ammermann is Master, from Bremen, burthen ________ tons.
Columns represent: passengers' names, age, sex, occupation, country to which they belong, country in which they intend to become inhabitants, and remarks. Original list numbered passengers within the class of travel, thus #1-56 in Cabin 1; and #1-219 in the lower deck. I have noted on the list where Cabin 1 and Lower Deck names begin. Transcriber's Notes:
* An asterisk indicates an error on the part of the original recorder, not the transcriber,
or is used to call your attention to additional information in the transcriber's notes.
? Indicates a letter or number which could not be determined due to the condition of the
manifest or handwriting of the original recorder.
* In the column for country from which passengers are coming there are designations
such as Hessen C. and Hessen D.--most likely meaning from Hessia Coburg or Hessia
Darmstadt, two different German duchys.
* The scribe for this list had a very clear handwriting style and was careful to note
family/marital relationships, usually omitting the last name after the first entry
and just entering: son, daughter, wife, mother, etc. He was not consistent. Sometimes
the relationship is in parenthesis, sometimes not.
* In a few instances, the destination state is misspelled. I have transcribed it as
found, i.e: Virginien, Massachussets, or also the occupation Taylor= tailor.
* The German names ending in "man" usually have just one "n" at the end of the surname.
Common usage in German is for a double "n" i.e. ...mann. It was usual for a writer to put a
line above one "n" to indicate a doubling of the letter, but that doesn't seem to be the case
on this list.
1-3: Surname has an umlaut over the "o".
Reviewer's note: the original spelling of Shlosser is most likely Schlosser.
4: Surname may have an umlaut over the "u".
6-7: Surname has an umlaut over the "u".
11: Reviewer's note: Gottshalk is probably misspelled, should be Gottschalk.
13: Reviewer's note: the last name could be.
15: Surname has an umlaut over the "o".
20-22: Surname has an umlaut over the "a".

52: Surname could be Trimposs or Trimpofs.
Reviewer's note: the last name could be Trimpop.
53: Surname has an umlaut over the "u".
62: Reviewer's note: the first u in Zullauf is u Umlaut.
73-74: Surname obliterated by crease/tear in original document, may be Mohr.
75-76: Reviewer's note: the last name could be Kolsdorff.
92-95: Reviewer's note: Hesse Ca might stand for Hessen Cassel. Virginien is probably
Virginia.
106: Surname has an umlaut over the "o".
121: Surname has an umlaut over the "o".
124: Surname has an umlaut over the "o".
125: Initial of given name is partially obscured, may be a "C".
129: Given name circled and entry surrounded by "x's" and then the word "Died".
Reviewer's note: according to a note at the end of the line, this passenger died
April 23rd.
146: Surname may have an umlaut over the "o".
150-152: Surname has an umlaut over the "a".
Reviewer's note: the original spelling was probably Schafer.
153: Surname has an umlaut over the "a".
154: Surname could be Kaderhorst.
165: Surname could be Hain.
170: Surname has an umlaut over the "o".
179: Reviewer's note: the last name could be.
180: Name obliterated by fold or tear in original document. First initial could be a "P".
Surname appears to have 6 to 7 letters, possibly ending in "ger".

219: Surname has an umlaut over the "u".
224: Reviewer's note: the original spelling is probably Bischoff..
226: the "v" in the surname probably is for von (possibly van) so name could be
von Langendorff or van Langendorff.

230: Reviewer's note: Dollner is spelled with o Umlaut.
233: Surname has an umlaut over the "o".

Reviewer's note: Originally Imshloss was probably spelled Imschloss.

from the Munsterland (u Umlaut) area in Germany to the United States. They came from
Burgsteinfurt. More information can be found at Auswanderungen im 19. Jahrhundert,
Emigration in the 19th Century. Click on the link in the top left corner,

one of the authors of this website. Currently the website is in German only, the
translation is work in progress. For more information on passengers from Burgsteinfurt,

Jacob F Volkenant, a well-known and well-to-do retired farmer of Lac qui Parle county, now
living in Madison, is a native son of Minnesota and has lived in this state all his life, having
therefore been a witness to and a participant in the wonderful progress and development that
have marked this region during the past generation. He was born in Scott county, this state
July 4, 1857, son of Frederick and Mary Volkenant, natives of Germany, who came to the United
States in 1855, some years after their marriage, and lived in Scott county for a short time.
In 1857 they pre-empted a tract of land in Carver county, Minnesota, where they established
their home. In 1865 Frederick Volkenant was drafted for service in the Union army during the
Civil War and died in service in that same year at Little Rock, Arkansas, leaving his widow and
seven children, Helen, Hugo, Jacob F, and Emma, Anna, Theresa and Mena, the first two of whom
were born in Germany and all of whom are living save Emma. In 1868 the Widow Volkenant married
George Mock and to that union one child was born, a daughter Mary. Mrs. Mock lived to the great
age of eighty-six years, her death occurring in 1915.
