Correspondence 01/12/03 passenger #35 Wangelein
Passenger # 35 listed as Joachim Carl WANGELEIN is my 3rd Great
Grandfather. He was born on 28 Feb 1825 as Carl Joachim Christian
Friedrich WANGELIN in Dehmen, Mecklenburg Schwerin to Ludwig David
Heinrich WANGELIN of Koelln Luedershagen Parish and Sophia Dorothia
BAUER or BUEHREN of Ziersdorff, Warnkenhagen Parish. He was christened
on 6 Mar 1825 in the Evangical Church Reinshagen Parish Mecklenburg
Schwerin and migrated from New York to Chicago, Cook County Illinois
before 1856. He married Johanna "Hanna" SCHMIDT and had 15 children
only 3 of which lived to adulthood. He died on 16 Feb 1909 at 50
Burling St., Chicago, Cook County Illinois and was buried on 18 Feb 1909
in Graceland Cemetery, Chicago, Cook County Illinois.
Family story has it that a brother who emigrated later also lived in
Chicago before moving south (proof of this is still being sought).
Joachim also known as John and his brother would boat down the river
and spend time with the Indian Tribes there. During the summer the
Indian's would set camp along the riverside (Chicago), and would travel
south for the winter. Joachim could see the Indians from his front
porch on Burling St., today members of the family still have a great
affinity for any tribe they meet. Joachim's descendants carry the name
of WANGELIEN and as of Jan 2003 make no connection to the Von Wangelin's
of Alten Schwerin (The Gentry of Germany).
For more information about these Wangelien's and the surname in general
