during the voyage.
Aug. 28, 1847
(Signed) G. Johansen
Transcriber's Notes:
There were 2 dates, but the earlier one, August 28, is probably the
date of arrival.
On the original, passenger numbers start over at #1 for steerage,
but has been altered here.
Town name Cincinnati, and Pensylv., spelled as found throughout the list.
For the baggage, the writer bracketed together the baggage for those who
seemed to be together. On this transcription, only those which were not
obvious will be footnoted here. The families' baggage will not be footnoted
as bracketed, though it was also.
Possibly one infant born on the voyage, see #146-149.
#1 letter(s) in town name could be rn or rm or nn.
#3 letter after 1st h in town name could be eis or eu or as.
Letter(s) after i not discernible, just a flat line.
#6-8 probably en on end of town name.
#17 first letter in town name is f or s; next letter is e or o.
#20 first name letter could be a or e or o.
#28 first letter in town name is L or Z, next could be u or ei.
#30-37 either n or si or ri with tilde over them, in town name.
#31 ink blot, but could be iz in first name.
#39-41 in surname, first letter could be a or e; last letter r or s.
#42 umlaut over a in surname.
#43 umlaut over u in surname. In town name, letter(s) after r
could be sv or w; after middle e, probably 2 letters which do not
extend above mid-point of line, then either f or old s, extending above
and below the line.
#44 either m or sn in surname.
#45 either m or sn or mn in town name.
#46-52 in town name, first letter possibly c or r or s, then either h or k.
#49 first name as found.
#52 in surname, probably ie, but possibly u.
#57-63 same as #46-52.
#64-67 letter(s) after G could be ei or u. After r could be le or h,
last letter could be s with tall tail or b.
#67 age 18 or 11.
#68-79 about 8 letters in question in town name, begins with S or L,
then probably eiferts.
#76-77 surname letter probably S, but could be L. Their baggage
bracketed with the Gieselers.
#81-101 destination looks like St. Marien, but the M could be ll;
or perhaps the St. is not abbreviation for Saint at all.
About 7 or so letters.
#83 age 27 or 29.
#88 her baggage bracketed with the Pantzers.
#92-93 their baggage was bracketed together.
#93 letters at end of surname could be n or se perhaps.
#107-115 for surname, possibly n or er on end.
For town name, probably ends with m.
#114 most of bottom part of name obliterated by tear, as well as age.
Possibly begins with N or K or V, 4th letter extends above mid-point.
#115 name & age completely obliterated, can only make out the word son.
#116 surname could be Schieder or Schnieder, or something that fits that
pattern of letters. His baggage bracketed with the Eichenau? baggage.
#117-120 letters in surname could be nd or srd for first 2 or so,
then possibly le or ei before the n. In town name, possibly ec or ar.
#121 age 27 or 29.
#122 surname letter(s) en or m.
#122-125 in town name, possibly Spr.
#123 possibly s in surname, and umlaut over y.
#125 occupation mostly obliterated; does not seem to be butcher or baker.
#126-132 in town name, possibly La or Lei, then possibly ch or sh,
then may end with z or e. Might be Leishenwalde, which is similar to
town for #135-138.
#133 his baggage may be bracketed with the Loos baggage.
#134 age 27 or 29.
#139 one or two letters in surname, could be ei or u or ri.
For town name, possibly Spre.
Area around age damaged but could end with 6.
#140-144 town name probably begins with S, but possibly L;
second letter in question does not extend above mid-point.
#145 probably begins with S, but could be L.
#146-149 baggage area damaged. There seems to be a note written after #149,
but very damaged, partly says "born on the way to Baltimore...",
no passenger # assigned to a possible infant born on the voyage.
#150 baggage bracketed with the Bachmeyer baggage.
#154 umlaut over a in surname. For town name, possibly begins Su or Sei,
or possibly begins with L.
#155-156 either e or o in surname.
#157-158 age 34 or 35. Town name begins with V or N, other letter probably r or c.
#159-164 either a or e in surname. Not certain if the original writer meant to
write Cincinnati for both columns.
#166-167 surname ends with y or g. Letter in town name is a or e or o.
#168 town name begins with L or Z, then either u or ei.
#170-173 surname probably ends with e. For town name, probably 2 letters,
which do not extend above mid-point.
#181-182 baggage bracketed together.
#182 letter in surname could be l or t.
#183 letters in town name either sf or ff.
#187 age probably 38, but last digit not clear, could be 1.
#191 same problem as for #187 though begins with 2.
#192 town name begins with L or Z, then ev or w perhaps.
Correspondence 3/8/01 passenger #145 Sauer
#145 Peter Sauer, born about 1832, emigrated in 1847 at age 15 from his
home in Germany to start a new life with his brother Mathias, who had emigrated
earlier and was already living in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Later they
were followed by another brother Ferdinand and sister Mary who moved to New
York. Their parents were Josef Sauer and Maria (Pfeiffer). Peter
Sauer married Josephine Meroditz in Johnstown, PA. They had at least one
child named Josephine Sauer.
Mathias Sauer moved to Stearns County, Minnesota and homesteaded 80 acres of
land which was deeded to him by the State of Minnesota on 20 November 1880.
Later Peter moved to MN, bought out Mathias' farm which was later lost and
the sheriff sold it. Thanks to the hard work of Gerald C. Sauer (of Texas)
this story would not be possible.

Correspondence 09/22/02 passengers 156 & 157 Zipf
I have reason to believe that the two people - 155 & 156 are my ancestors
