I, R. D. Monro, Master of the SS City of Rome do solemnly, sincerely and truly declare that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of the City of New York is a full and perfect list of all the passengers taken on board the said vessel at Liverpool from which port said vessel has now arrived; and that on said list is truly designated the age, the sex, and the calling of each of said passengers, the location of the compartment or space occupied by each during the passage, the country or citizenship of each, and also the destination or location intended by each; and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of said passengers who have died on said voyage, and the dates and causes of death; and the names and ages of those who died; also the pieces of baggage of each; also a true statement, so far as it can be ascertained, with reference to the intention of each alien passengers as to a protracted sojourn in this country. Names that were difficult to read were marked with ?. Each question mark reflects the approximate number of unknown letters. Please contact the transcriber if there are any questions concerning the transcription of names. The collector used ditto marks and "do" frequently. The transcriber typed in the word rather than leave a blank. In the baggage column, the collector used a curly bracket to show a total number of bags per family. The transcriber typed the number with the initial family member. Passenger 685 - sex listed as "M" on manifest, but with the occupation of "spinster" transcriber believes the sex should be female. Passenger 723 - sex listed as "M" on manifest but with the first name Anna, sex should be female. Passenger 725 - this passenger appears to be a female. Do not know what her first name of "Burt." could stand for. Passenger 726 - difficult name to transcribe, open to discussion Passengers 765-767 - the end of name just a scribble Passengers 768-772 - difficult name to transcribe, appears to be Ulinaw Passengers 827, 828, 832-834 - these passengers were listed as "transit" Passengers 863 & 864 - the numbers were listed in the "month" column, interpreted as 11 months Passenger 865 - it appears that the name was entered "lastname, first" Passenger 868 - This name could be Ostman, Istman, or Estman. Passenger 873 - the name is totally smudged. Passenger 882 - the number listed in the "month" column, interpreted 4 months Passenger 887 - the number listed in the "month" column, interpreted 6 months Passenger 904 - age smudged, could be either 28 or 38
