Transcriber's Notes:
* The use of an * indicates an omission or error made by the original recorder.
* The use of a ? indicates a word or letters that could not be read, due to
quality of original document.
* The passenger numbers were added by the transcriber.
* Starting with passenger 18, the author of the list, W.K. Bradish, used
the customary "d" signifying "ditto" meaning "the same as above"; however,
he was not consistent with the usage, because he also used the character
to indicate non entry. Therefore, the transcriber, not wanting to make
obviously incorrect entries, will interpret the ditto as same as above
when that is deemed correct. Where the ditto is ambiguous, the entry will
be blank.
* Passengers 27 and 28 sex & occupation (and age for 28) as written; however,
there appears to have been an error in the columns which the author corrected
with passenger 29.
* Passenger 33 occupation scratched out; it did read "gardener" which is
probably the occupation of passenger 35 whose occupation is indicated with
the "d" for ditto. The occupation for passenger 34 is probably erroneous.
* Passenger 44 "Salesman" is repeated in the intended destination column.
* Passenger 47 destination possibly "Ea" Canada. Destination for passengers
48 through 51 were dittos.
* Passenger 54. Entry was crossed through with the notation: "Not on board
this ship".
* Passenger 74. Occupation as written.
* Passenger 79. Occupation written then deleted. Same as following passenger.
Not sure about the word.
* Passenger 90. Possibly Crawford.
* Passenger 95. Not sure of number in the months column.
* Steerage number 66 was crossed out.
* Total number of 97 was crossed out.
* There were no entries in the "died on the voyage" column.
Correspondence 07/23/02 passenger #12-18 Shaw
My family are the Shaws, passengers number 12 to 18.
Just a bit about Alexander R. Shaw. He had originally come
to the US with his parents and siblings in 1801 from near
the town of Lurgen in County Down, Ireland. Later on in his
life after he had married he went to England and lived and
worked there for a number of years having a great deal of
success, before deciding to finally return to the US for the
remainder of his life. When he returned in 1843 he lived in
Philadelphia near his brother James. Alexander was the
brother of my direct ancestor William Shaw.
