Transcriber's Notes about Manifest

* The use of an asterisk (*) indicates an omission or error made by the
  original recorder.
* The use of a question mark (?) indicates a word or letters that could not be
read, due to the quality of the original document.
* Since there was only one death on the voyage, the column Died on the Voyage
  was omitted.
* Punctuation is haphazard throughout the manifest; abbreviations of names,
and initials, are generally written without punctuation. Exceptions are noted.
* No accent marks were used on this passenger list.
* Jean B. Valo - in column indicating sex, F was originally written and then
crossed out; then Male was indicated.
* Francoise Bernard - feminine form of the name given (Francoise, as opposed
to Francois), but sex listed as male.
* Jean B. P Cardot - masculine form of the name given (Jean rather than
Jeanne), but sex listed as female. Because the Cardot listing appears to
follow the customary format (husband, wife, children),
I would cautiously assume that this person is a female.
* Justin Cardot - masculine form of the name given (Justin as opposed to
Justine); sex originally listed as male but female later superimposed.
* Francoise Cardot - feminine form of the name given (Francoise, as opposed
to Francois), but sex listed as male.
* Francoise J Spetz - feminine form of the name given (Francoise, as opposed
to Francois), but sex listed as male.
* Francoise Bruez - feminine form of the name given (Francoise, as opposed to
Francois), but sex listed as male.
* Leonard Montzeot - age listed as 2-and-1/2 months; also notation "born on
  this passage."
* Michel Bourgeois - name Michel is superimposed on another name which was
apparently written in error, and initials J. C. were crossed out.
* Marie Rose Cardot - notation "died on the passage," no date given.

Transcriber's Notes on Passengers

* Paul Girard, wife Marianne Patingre, and children emigrated from Rechesy,
Territory of Belfort, France, to Frenchtown, Crawford County, PA.
* Girard is consistently spelled with an i in all French records (rather than
with an e as appears on the manifest). Paul Girard consistently signed his
name as Girard in French documents.
* Pierre Nicolas Patingre (brother of Marianne Patingre Girard), wife and
children emigrated from Lepuix-Neuf, Territory of Belfort, France; nfr.
* Xavier Bideaux, wife Marianne Bourgeois, and children emigrated from
Villars-le-Sec, Territory of Belfort, France, to Frenchtown, Crawford Co., PA

Correspondence 07/14/2003 passengers #46-52 Spetz
My ancestor Jean-Thiebault Spetz and his family arrived in New York City
on board the Leonarde 29 Aug 1828 from Le Havre. It was reported anecdotally
through the years that the voyage was 96 days long, much longer than average.
I was skeptical about the time quoted until I found the family on board the
"Leonarde", but a child, Leonard Montzect, was born during the voyage and
upon arrival he was listed on the manifest as being 2 1/2 months old,
thereby verifying the oral tradition that the ocean voyage was 96 days
long! They arrived "dead broke." Black market for food? The family
emigrated to Waterloo County in Ontario and was one of the first Catholic
families there. George Kraemer
