Transcriber's notes:
There were definitely two people recording the passengers on
the original list. Passengers 1 through 221 on the Between Deck
and 1 through 41 in the Cabin were written fairly legibly; the
handwriting that recorded passengers 222 through 246 on the
Between Deck and 42 through 48 in the Cabin area was much more
difficult to read. The writing was very small and faint.
All passengers intended to inhabit the United States; therefore,
I have eliminated that column to save space.
I have eliminated the Death column since there are no notations
in it. I do think Passenger 246 was born and died on board but
I can't be certain as the writing is very faint and small.
? denotes letters or words that can't be read accurately due to
imperfections on the film or my difficulty in reading the original
recorder's handwriting.
The following notes are listed by passenger numbers:
BETWEEN DECKS
6 Johann? - The given name is either Johanna or Johanne.
12 Stinon??a - The surname is either Stinontda or Stinonka.
15 Ke??fener - The writing is very faint in this one spot; neither
letter falls below the line or extends higher than the letter to
the left of them.
16 ????? - There is a line running through the entire name. The line
appears to have been caused by a fold on the original page.
18 Ha??e Neumann - There is a line drawn through the passenger's name
and the information accompanying it. A note is printed in the margin
to the left of the name. The notation reads, Not on board. This
passenger's age is either 41 or 45.
19 Chata Schmidt - The last letter in the given name is written as a
superscipt. The letter F rather than fem is written in the sex column.
28 H??y Hafenstein - The two letters in question look much alike. Neither
extends below the line nor higher than an e for example.
29 Wenzel Pokorny - His age is either 33 or 35.
31 Marie Pokorny - The recorder had originally written 26 as the age,
then crossed it out with an X and the number 4 is written to the left.
39 Josefa Dolezal - Her age is written with a number 1 and then a small
mark to the right as if the recorder was beginning another number and
didn't finish it.
40 Anton Lorenz - The age is very faint but is either 25 or 35.
46 through 50 Zie???im - None of the letters fall below the line or
extend high above the line.
51 J??dor Kalmann - The first letter in question rises high as if it were
an l. The recorder usually crossed his t's and there is no cross on
this letter. The second letter in question is either i or r.
58 Bartholom??? Stina - None of the letters fall below the line or extend
high above the line.
60 Josef Pokol - The age is impossible to decipher since it is so faint.
62 Valentin Bai??sch - The letters are very faint but they don't extend
below the line or high above the line. The age is either 30 or 31.
63 and 64 Ke?l - The surname is either Keil or Kerl. The first letter in
the occupation in question is either f or p.
67 Johanna Engel - The passenger is listed as a female but the word son is
written in the occupation column. The given name is definitely Johanna
so I feel the recorder made a mistake in calling her a son.
74 and 76 Joh? Glanz - I can't tell whether the letter in question is just
a slight mark or if it could be an s.
81 Nicol?? Hausen - The name could be either Nicolei or Nicolu.
83 Georg Diefenhard - The age is either 31 or 51.
85 Pauli?? Schaefer - None of the letters in question fall below the line
or extend high above the line.
88 and 90 Cha??ce Ganz - The letters in question are hard to distinguish
but I believe the name could be Charice, Chauce, or Chance.
97 and 98 Matslepoz? - The name is either Matslepozg or Matslepozy.
99 Johann?? Dombrowa - The letters in question might just be extra loops
on one of the n's in the name but it's too hard to decipher correctly.
103 and 104 Pant? - I can't tell if the letter in question is just an extra
flourish made by the recorder or if it is an s.
107 Caroline Bi??hau?? - The first two letters in question don't fall below
the line or extend high above the line. The last two letters are
either sz or just s with a flourish at the end.
108 Dominik Dinkieco?? - The first letter in question is either r or n
and the last letter is g, y, or z.
109 Anna Drakonnona - Her age is either 20 or 50. There are fibre lines
running through part of the numbers.
112 and 114 Wendel?? Breuner - The two letters kind of drift off and are
impossible to decipher.
117 through 119 Kol?tan - The name is either Kolktan or Kolttan.
125 through 129 Pop??n? - The first two letters in question are not distinct
enough to read but the first of them appears to extend high above the
line as in a d. The last letter in the name is g or y. The age for
passenger 127 had two numbers written and then the second one was
scribbled out.
130 through 137 Sema?i? - Neither of the letters fall below the line or
extend high above the line.
138 Mi??a Ruben - The letters run together but neither of them fall below
the line or extend high above the line.
149 Solig Goldschmidt - There is a line drawn through this entry with a
notation in the left margin that is printed "To second cabin". This
passenger appears in the Cabin section as passenger 45.
151 He?? Bottcher - None of the letters in the given name and occupation
are written legibly enough to recognize. The letters don't fall below
the line or rise high above the line.
152 Joseph Schwartz - His age is either 27 or 29. The recorder tends to run
his numbers together, making some of them difficult to decipher.
153 Lorgen Petersen - His age is either 23 or 33.
154 Kjernts?? Petersen - There is a dark smear over the letters but neither
one falls below the line or rises higher above the line.
161 Hans Nohk??? - The three letters in question tend to run together making
it impossible to decipher accurately. None of them fall below the line
or rise higher above the line.
165 Liebset? Lase - The letter in question doesn't fall below the line or
rise higher above the line.
168 through 171 G??r - The name is either Gabr, Gobr, Gahr, or Gohr.
Passenger 170 - The given name is either Niles, Miles, or Wiles.
181 Jos?? ???schfeld - This name is very faint, making it impossible to read
accurately. Except for the first letter in the surname, none of the
letters fall below the line or rise higher above the line. The letters
in the occupation are not distinct enough to recognize but neither of
them fall below the line or rise higher above the line.
195 Emilie ?olk - The recorder tended to write a P with almost no loop in it
but I personally think this name is Polk, although I can't be certain.
197 Katha??? Kynel - The three letters are written as a very small squiggly
line, making it impossible to decipher. None of the letters fall below
the line or rise higher above the line.
203 ?aclar Sasa - This letter is not similar to other letters that are written
and looks like a straight vertical line with a small squiggly line at the
top, to the left of the vertical line.
213 Giovanni Pa?covich - This letter does not fall below the line or rise
higher above the line.
217 Otto Schle?? - These letters do not fall below the line or rise higher
above the line.
220 ?chn? Rosenthal - I can't decipher the first letter but the last one
might be an i.
221 through 226 Steoa?s - The questionable letter in the surname doesn't
fall below the line or rise higher above the line. The first letter in
the given name for Passenger 221 is too faint to read accurately. The first
letter in the given name for Passenger 225 is either H or M.
228 Pa??lein Leimhof - The two letters in question are written as small
squiggly lines and are impossible to decipher.
230 Robert Ma?s - The name is either Maas or Mans.
231 August Nebbien - His age is either 24 or 34.
233 ?orine Kuhl - This name is very faint but what I can see of the letter
appears to be written like a C. The letters in the occupation are too
small and faint to decipher accurately.
234 Fal?? Aberle - Neither letter falls below the line or rises higher above
the line. The first number of the age is too faint to decipher.
235 Barbara - There is no indication of a surname and no ditto marks signifying
the same name as on the line above.
236 Marie Wai?ner - This letter is too faint to read accurately but it doesn't
fall below the line or rise higher above the line.
237 Wilhelm Sh??gen - These letters are too faint to read accurately but
neither fall below the line or rise higher above the line.
238 Carl Doi?lin - This name is either Doihlin or Doiklin. The country he
originated from I believe is a short form of Switzerland.
239 A. Ackermann - The country he originated from I believe is a short form
of Switzerland.
240 Solomon Du?as - There is a dark smear over part of the name but the letter
in question appears to rise higher above the line and appears to be
either H or K. His age is either 23 or 25.
242 ?? Baker - There are only what appears to be two letters but they're too
faint to read.
243 Fas Shaingen - His occupation is too faint to read at all.
244 Ad Boehring - His occupation is too faint to read at all.
245 ?alo Beh?indh - The first letter in the given name is too faint to read.
The letter in question in the surname is partially covered by a letter
in the line above it.
246 Josepeh ????y - This line is written very faintly and I have enlarged
and colored it, trying to make sense of it and I believe, although I
can't be certain, that the line reads, after the name: born and Died
on board.
CABIN PASSENGERS
1 Marie Ad?or - The name is either Adeor or Adcor.
3 Charlotte Ge?ns - The name is either Geins or Gerns.
5 through 16 Tuento?tter - The name is either Tuentoctter or Tuentoetter.
The two letters in question for the given name of Passenger 8 do not fall
below the line or rise higher above the line.
21 ?iclo Reiler - The letter in question is impossible to decipher. It is
written as a vertical line with a flourish on the left of it.
26 Georg Timme - The questionable letters in the occupation are impossible
to decipher but don't appear to fall below the line or rise higher above
the line.
30 Captan Wiesne?s - The letter in question doesn't fall below the line or
rise higher above the line.
42 Oma?? Tileman - This name has a line running through it as well as a
separate line running through the age although there is no notation in
the margin about whether he was on board or not.
44 Louis Henno? - The name is either Hennog or Hennoz.
45 ?olig Goldschmid? - The questionable letter in the given name is impossible
to recognize due to the faintness of the writing. The surname is either
Goldschmidt or Goldschmidh.
47 He?. V. Wiedenhoeff? - The two letters following the H in the given name
