SS Furst Bismarck
I, A. Albers, Master of the SS Furst Bismarck do solemnly, sincerely, and truly declare that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of New York, is a full and perfect list of all the Passengers taken on board of the said SS Furst Bismarck at Hamburg from which port said SS Furst Bismarck has now arrived, and that on said list is truly designated the age, the sex and the occupation of each of said passengers, the location of the compartments or space of the said vessel occupied by each during the passage, the country of citizenship of each, and also the destination or location intended by each, and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of said passengers who have died on said voyage and the dates, and the names and ages of those who died, also of the pieces of baggage of each, also a true statement so far as can be ascertained with reference to the "intention of each alien passenger, as to a protracted sojourn in this country." The column "Died on the Voyage" was omitted as there were no deaths recorded. In the column,"Location of compartment", lister had added this note: "A,B,C,D&E are Tweendeck Compartments. Second Cabin Maindeck". The column "Intention of each alien pass. as to a protracted sojourn in this country" was eliminated. All entries except one had recorded "alien". The sole exception was Passenger #538, who was a citizen. The numbering system was done by the translator and differed from the system employed by the lister. Passengers 463,480,500,506,550,557,573,584,614 and 615 - All had an asterisk after the surname recorded by the lister. It is not clear what this signifies. 461,462. These persons may be connected to passengers 540-544, altho the names are spelled somewhat differently; came from same place. 463 Could possibly be Gacantowicz. 465 Hailing place. The country is listed as Austria; however lister wrote "Ko", but placed a ditto also, which would indicate Dembsen,Poland,the prior entry. Error? 470 Hailing place is different from rest of the family. Error? 470-474 Probably Kemnitz. Present day Germany. 484 First name - lister wrote the first three letters and then a dash. 487-490. First surname clearly "Brodzenska", w/a ditto for name after. Third name is at top of next page & is written "Brodzewska" w/ditto for following name. Hailing place of 1st & 2nd is Brinsk; 3rd & 4th hail from Brinck. Believe these people are all from the same family. Present day Brink Germany? 492 is shown as coming from Radlow; however, the children below are listed from Krakau. 495&496; two are listed as from Krakau; children from elsewhere. Believe lister made an error than includes the listing for 492 down. 497 & 498. Hailing place could begin with either a "B" or "P". 500-501-502 Hailing place listed as Warschau (old sp. for Warsaw Poland), yet country of origin is Austria. No Warschau currently in Austria but a Warsow is in present Germany. 505 Hailing place may be Jaromin. 506 Hailing place could be Zilmec. 507 Hailing place now Kiev. 538 This passenger was the only person listed as a citizen (presumably of US) 540-544 See comments for 461&462. Also, 544 is listed as male, but has feminine name. 550&551 Could also be Podesencky. 566 Schonberg has umlaut over "o". 573 Occupation. Probably some kind of driver - German word for driver, guide, pilot is "lenker". 589 Last name could also be Tingel. 590-592. All three hailing places are different for what appears to be a family. Further Wianowitz is listed as being in Austria, but in next entry is listed as Bohemia. 597-599 Hailing place could also be "Slowiscin". 598 Is there an entry missing? Nassie is listed as a wife, but no husband listed 600-601 Hailing place could be Veitobo. 609 No entry for hailing place - assume it is the same as two above. 610 No entry for hailing place. 613 The entry above and the 4 below all list country of origin as Poland and hailing place as Litowewska. Error on this person? 615 Sex listed as male, but listed as wife. 619&620 Married couple - different hailing places? 619 bottom of page; 620 top of other. 638 First name could be "Vessen".
