Correspondence 12/06/01 passenger #194 Hulshof(f)
My ancestor is Caspar Hulshof who boarded the ship Eutaw in Bremen,
Germany bound to Baltimore, Maryland, United States on the 15th September
of 1845.
You requested that I inform you where this person settled. Unfortunately
I don’t yet know. I know his ancestors but not his descendants. His
descendants shall be part two of my quest searching for my American family.
I am writing from Holland, I am Dutch. Part of Caspar ancestors migrated
to the US, other to Holland, others remained put in Germany. I hope
this shall help me located my ancestors should they come to your homepage.
I am also looking for Bernhard Hulshoff from Lingen who traveled to NY.
Officially Caspar Hulshof should be spelled with a double ff.
Sebastian Hulshoff
Correspondence 05/21/02 passengers #135-138 Bettinghaus & Eggert
I have some information about passenger 135: C. W. Bettinghaus. His
brother Johann Hermann Bettinghaus married Anna Maria Waldmann, who is
my Great-Great-Grandaunt, so that's how we're related.
Claus Wilhelm Bettinghaus was born Sept 19th 1822 in Hiddinghausen,
parish of Schledehausen. His parents are Balthasar Heinrich Bettinghaus
and Katharine Marie Tepe. Balthasar Heinrich Bettinghaus was the miller
of our area and his son Johann Hermann (see above) inherited the mill
(which is known as "Hiddinghäuser Mühle").
Claus Wilhelm Bettinghaus married Emilie Marie Bramsche (passenger
136!), born May 27th 1823 in Langelage, daughter of Hermann Heinrich
Bramsche and Anne Marie Margarethe Sollmann. I don't know where they
settled in the USA but they both died in Michigan. Claus Wilhelm died
Aug 7th 1875 in Muskeson County, his wife died Oct 27th 1905 in Kent
County. They had nine children:
1. Catherine Emilie, born Dec 10th 1845, died Jun 29th 1918
2. Maria Anna, born Feb 15th 1848, died Feb 20th 1848
3. Henry Christopher, born Mar 5th 1849, died Jun 7th 1925
4. Johann, born Mar 18th 1852, died Aug 23rd 1853
5. Anna Emilie, born Jul 22nd 1853
6. Caroline Louise, born Jan 17th 1856
7. Emilie Elizabeth, born May 11th 1858, died Feb 10th 1926
8. George William, born May 4th 1860, died May 31st 1920
9. Charles Julius, born Oct 25th 1864, died Mar 31st 1932
I also recognize the name Ch. Hch. Eggert (passenger 137). I have
Heinrich Christoph Wilhelm Eggert, born Dec 5th 1815 in Hiddinghausen.
The Eggert farm is a neighbouring farm to the mill of the Bettinghaus
family. So I'm sure Claus Wilhelm Bettinghaus and Heinrich Christoph
Wilhelm Eggert emigrated together. Passenger No 138 must be the wife of
H. C. W. Eggert but I don't have any information about her.
I grew up in the neighourhood of the Mill of Hiddinhausen. My ancestors
lived on the Waldmann farm for at least 400 years. In some way I'm
related to both, Claus Wilhelm Bettinghaus and Heinrich Christoph
Wilhelm Eggert (his mother is a sister of my g.g.g.g-grandfather).
That's how it is in small towns in Germany. If your family had lived in
one place for centuries you are related to every other family that had
lived there for centuries, too.
I published some of my family research results on my web site:
