I, W.B. Seabury, Master of the SS China do solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of San Francisco, is a full and perfect list of all Chinese passengers taken on board the said vessel at Hong Kong nad Yokohama from which port said vessel has now arrived, or that have been taken on board the said vessel at any foreign port or place, and of all such passengers now on board said vessel, and that on said List is truly designated the names and other particulars, as shown by their respective certificates.So help me God. The pages on this film are not numbered so finding a particular ship can be difficult.
However, there appears to be a system of numbering the manifests. These numbers are
included in the identification of the film and reel numbers below.
There are two numbers entered in the burthen blank. The second, written above that
transcribed here at the top of the page is 4969.63.
Passengers' name and age are followed by a stamp that varies depending on the disposition
of the passenger and which is stamped over whatever information has been entered in the
columns.
Passengers allowed to land have one of the following stamps:
Landed Collectors order (blank with a month and day date written in) 1893 by
Insp's (blank for a name, in this case Grant).
Landed "I.T." Transit List followed by a number. These passengers are bound for a
further port.
Passengers not allowed to land have one of two different stamps:
Habeas Corpus U.S.D.C. Case followed by a number. These passengers were probably allowed
to land, but not to freely enter the country.
Refused Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date).

If accredited oficers of Chinese Government, state facts is completed for passengers bound
for San Francisco. It says "Affdt Merchant" for all passengers who were bound for and
landed in San Francisco. It is not included in the table for passengers on the first
page to provide space for the Physical Marks information.
Physical Marks or Peculiarities and Facts of Identification is written over the Affdt
Merchant (or vice versa) for passengers 1-44 and 185-217. This information is barely
legible and is therefore only partially transcribed.
Last Place of Residence appears to have been completed in passengers 1-179 but is very
difficult to read because it is obscured by the stamp. The legible entries are included
in the table.
Passengers in transit to Chicago (185-217) were Landed by the Collector Enroute to the
Worlds Columbian Exposition. Their occupations were "Actor" and their Last Residence
was "China." These passengers apparently were numbered separately, hence the second
column of numbers.
Passengers in transit to Panama Departed per steamship Acapulco July 3, 1893. Their
Occucpations were "Grocer" and Last Place of Residence "China."
Passengers in transit to Havana Occupations were "Grocer" and Last Residence "China."
Passengers refused landing in Honolulu Occupations were "Grocer." No Last Residence is
listed.
The Recapitulation is difficult to understand but is transcribed exactly as written. Str
usually means steamer.
