Jacques Balser (French version), or Jakob Balzer (German version), and
Jacob Balzer, English spelling.

Jakob was born in Neuburg am Rhein, Germany, 25 March 1797. While Neuberg was
under French control, Jakob, at the age of 15, had to serve in Napoleon's army
which attacked Russia. When they reached Moscow, the city was in flames, and
the shelter they had counted on was gone. The retreat was one of the great
disasters of military history. Of the nearly 500,000 men who had set out in
June, fewer than 20,000 ragged, freezing, starving men staggered back across
the Russian frontier in December of 1812. Jakob survived, but it took him 10
years to get home. At one point he had to kill his horse for meat to stay
alive.

Upon returning, he married Margaretha Vollmer and they had 2 children who
lived: Valentin born in 1826 and Jacob, Jr. born in 1828. Margaretha died at
29 as a result of childbirth. (Valentin is my great-grandfather). Both sons
came to America at different times and they lived to be old and have many
descendants.

Jacques (Jacob) Balzer's second marriage was to Catharina Balser (no relation)
in 1810. Three of their children lived and are listed on the Carack's ship
list. Bernhard "Barney" (1834-1864) before emigrating, joined a group to
overthrow the Emperor of Germany. The uprising failed, and he came home in
the night begging his father to hide him. His father (Jakob) dug a dungeon
under where he fed the pigs, covered it with boards then straw. They took him
food in the night. The Emperor's soldiers came looking for him and poked
their long spears in the hay and would have killed him had they found him.
When his father got enought money together, he put him under a load of manure
so the border guards wouldn't see him, and took him to France. Barney and his
family emigrated to America, but Barney died in the Battle of Chickamauga in
the Civil War at the age of 30.

Anna Maria "Mary" married first George William Vollmer, who died, and second
Jacob Wulz. She had many children and died at the age of 93 near Quincy,
Illinois.

Daniel Jakob (1846-1938) wrote many stories in his Family Bible. On Sundays,
he would have his children, then grandchildren sit on the porch swing of the
house he built and listen to Bible stories--and stories of his youth. He used
to laugh and tell how his father (Jacob) drove his team past the wonderful
prairie grassland in Adams County, IL, as he was a cooper by trade. They were
so proud to cut down trees, plane the wood, and make barrels, haul them to
Quincy, IL where they were used to pack meat to put on boats that would go
down the Mississippi River to St. Louis and points south.

When they lived in Germany, the only firewood they could have was on Saturday.
Everyone would go to the forest and pick up (under guard) the sticks and dead
limbs that fell. Dan told of driving a team with barrels loaded and of them
rolling off the hill and his father scolding him for going so fast.

Dan also told them about the astronomical clock inside the Cathedral in
Strasbourg that he loved to visit often as a little boy. The clock still
works well and is as awe-inspiring as it was in the 1800s.

Dan was very faithful in the Brethren church and had many offices and duties.
He lived to be 92 and left innumerable descendants. This is copied from
Daniel's Bible and the information given to several descendants, including
Florence Muder-Grimmer, Maxine Vollmer-Prather and Mary Ann Balzer-Sharp.

The notes regarding their voyage:

The family went by boat from Neuburg am Rhein, Germany, to Strasbourg, then
rail to Paris and then Le Havre, France. They stayed in Le Havre 8 days,
then boarded the ship Carack for New Orleans. The trip took 42 days to get
to New Orleans, and they encountered a great storm and a large mast on the
ship broke. The father tied them, mother, daughter, sons, and father to their
chairs and great waves of water would wash over the ship, but it finally was
calm and they fixed the mast and landed in New Orleans. They were there 8
days before they headed up to Quincy on the Mississippi River by steamboat.
They landed in Quincy, IL on 10 November 1854. Total days was 68. They
settled in McKee Township.

Correspondence added May 28, 2008; passenger #69 REISS Babette
I think that passenger #69 Babette Reiss was my great-great mother.
She married in New-Orleans Leman Meyer from France (Elsass). Due to Mississipi
River floods which ruined their small shop, yellow fever and Civil War,
they decided to go back to France. Babette died in Paris in 1911. Her
daughter Nanette was my great mother. I knew her as a little child. She died in
1934. She married Nathan Widrich from Lemberg Austria and had two
children. One was killed in French army in 1916. The other, my mother born in
1898 died 10 years ago in Paris. Best regards.
