I K B. Draayer do solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear that the Report or Manifest subscr? with my name, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the District of Philadelphia, contains, to the best of my knowledge and belief, a just and true account of all the passengers which were on board the ship Schooner Bond at the time of her sailing from the port of Amsterdam or which have been taken on board at any time since; that I am at present and have been during the voyage, master of the said vessel. And I do likewise swear that all matters whatsoever in the said Report or Manifest, are to the best of my knowledge and belief, just and true. SO HELP ME GOD. Sworn before me, this 31st* day of July 1832 Collector (signed) John Ken??y (signed) B. Draijer*
REPORT OR MANIFEST of all the Passengers taken on board the ship Schooner Bond whereof K. B. Draayer is Master, from Amsterdam bur? Tons, and owned by (left blank) of (left blank) and bound to Philadelphia.
Columns represent: "Names, Age, Sex, Occupation, To what Country belonging, Country of which it is their intention to become Inhabitants, Number and Names of Passengers w? died on the voyage." In the age column, Jaar is Dutch for years, weeken for weeks and Maan for months. The Sex column is also in Dutch: Man is man, Vrouw is woman or wife, Meisje is girl, Jongen is boy. Some men or women (over 20 years old) are also listed as Jongen and Meisje, by which we can assume they are unmarried. "Farmers, Mechanics & Labourers" was written down the "Occupation" column for all on board. The "To what Country belonging" column listed "Wurtenburg" for all passengers. The "Country of which it is their intention to become inhabitants" column showed "U. States" for all passengers. A break between the lines shows where one page ends and the next begins.

Weber 24 Jongen 292 Wakker 26 1/2 Maisje Transcriber's notes: There were three deaths recorded: no. 117 (aan boord overleden = passed away on board), no. 175 (aan boord gestorven = died on board) and no. 284 (aan boord gestorven) On the first page, someone has written in large, modern-style block letters [SCH. VERBOND, AMSTERDAM, JULY 28, 1832]. Therefore this ship may be listed in other places as "Verbond". However, in the original manifest it is only found as "ship Schooner Bond". The "3" of 31st could have been misread as a "2". Although the second digit of the date "31st" is unclear, I am quite certain it is a 1 (one), supported by the "st" following it. This list was written by (at least) two individuals. One (whose handwriting became worse as he went on) began by writing the first initials and last name of the men followed by "d-----" (for ditto) in the columns beneath for each member of the family. Another later filled in the names of the women and children and the ages and sexes in Dutch (very nice handwriting). Remarkably, the "Dutchman" listed the women's maiden names. Many of them end with "in". In southern Germany it is still sometimes customary for a woman to say her surname is Muellerin, when it is actually Mueller. "in" is the feminine suffix. (Since the maiden names are in many cases more legible than their husbands' names, researchers who know the maiden names of their subjects would be advised to look for these names as well!) The legibility of this list is made difficult by oblique slashes made across the names, perhaps when the list was being checked through as they left the ship. The ? marks indicate letters that cannot be read due to the quality of the original document. The captain's name is written twice as "Draayer" but he signs himself as "Draijer". 3-6: a slash and "Kind" (Dutch for child) is written after the first child's name and the ensuing siblings have dittos under Kind. It appears the writer decided not to make use of this further in the list. 11: Gaitner could be a (phonetic) misspelling of Gaertner, the third letter is clearly dotted, so I interpreted it as an "i". 21: An upper case K was crossed out before the name Catharina. 28: Looks like Schock. 29: Meijrin is probably the Dutch way of spelling "Meyerin", "Meierin" or "Maierin". 56: The writer of surnames never uses an umlaut. Muller would be Müller 57: Schonem??ger: Umlaut over the "o". Could be Schoenemenger. 62: Zuster* means sister. She is probably the older sister of J. Muller. Though age 48, she is listed as a girl (Meisje) which means she is unmarried. Between 62 and 63: Another "d----" for ditto was listed here but no name written. One of the two list-writers miscounted. 66: Could be 1 1/2. If not, perhaps they are twins? 74: Zurnin: There was another capital letter before the Z - perhaps a G. 77: Meid can mean girl, but is only used twice in this list. Since a 33 year old woman is obviously too old to be the daughter of 75 and 76, it is highly likely that she was their maid (another use of Meid in Dutch) 81: Probably Bosch or Borch. 90: Probably Schmidt. 98: There is a 9 crossed out before the 2. 100: Second letter smudged. Name looks like Kling 107 & 108: ages rather smudged or overwritten 113: Lodewyk is probably a Dutch spelling of Ludwig 119: Helriegel was inserted a line below the name due to lack of space. 123: Could be Wagner. Hard to tell upper case W from N. 128: Ratt could be the phonetic spelling of Rath (th pronounced as t). This entire name, age and sex were struck through. 129: Rath was written by the Dutchman. She may be the sister (Zuster) of 128, and/or belong to the Rath family of 139-144 130: Elisabeth Catharina: There is no ditto next to the name of this two-year old girl so the surname is uncertain. Possibly with 128 (as the name is squeezed in directly below 128) or belongs to Rath family of 139-144. 133: There was not enough room to write out the name. Fredk* (the "k" is slightly above the rest of the name) abbreviation of Frederika. 138: Age probably 1-1/2 149: Age could be just "1/2". There is a smear before that, which may be a 1. 152: Moeder is Dutch for Mother. She is quite probably the mother of 150. Heizer in parentheses was clearly written to the right of the sex in the column for occupations. Heizer is a German word meaning fireman (on locomotive) or stoker (on ship). Nothing else in this list is written in German (besides the German names). Since I cannot imagine that a 63 year old lady was put to work stoking the fires, this may well be her maiden name, put in the right column as an afterthought since there was no room left in the name column. 161: "1/2" or "1/4" after age appears to be crossed out with an "x" 165: Below two first names the word "aucn" or "auch" appears. May be upper case A. Probably her maiden name. 166: Catha is abbrevaition for Catharina. 168: Holsworth may be phonetic misspelling of Holzworth or Holzwort. Since a 27 year old man is listed as a boy (Jongen) he is unmarried. 171: age could be 50 177: Woern: first letter could also possibly be an N. 179: First initial smudged. Probably C. ?hwann: first letter of surname smudged; appears, however, to be an S. If so, it could be a misspelling of the name Schwann. 188: Age is either 3 or 13. 193: Catharina: (see 77) Since a 20 year old girl is obviously too old to be the daughter of 191 and 192, it is highly likely that she was their maid (another use of Meid in Dutch). 198: Carolina was added to the left of the initial C later. 201: Could also be Saule. 208: Smudged letter looks like a "b". 226, 227, 228: It is unclear who is the husband here. 226 is listed as a (25 year old) boy. In all other cases in this list "boys" who are obviously men are unaccompanied bachelors. 227 is a married woman (second name is maiden name). Second digit of her age is smudged. 228 is listed as Zwager which means brother-in-law. This could mean he is the brother-in-law of 226, which would make him the husband of 227, or he is the brother of 227, in which case his surname is uncertain. (On the list it is "d-----" for ditto.) Between 240 and 241: Another "d----" for ditto was listed here but no name written. One of the two list-writers miscounted. 253: Smudged first initial is F or J. 259: Listed as a girl although Christian is a male name. 266: Last two letters in Rexgra?? may be "th". 270: The writer of surnames never uses an umlaut. Jager would be Jäger. 281: The illegible letter is either a "g" or an "ej". 284: Age and sex not listed. (died on board) Correspondence added 3 May 2000 I am so excited. I purchased the Family and Tree Magazine April 2000. Because of the 101 websites as top genealogy sites, I decided to try your website. I always thought I had to make a trip to Philadelphia to find this information. Passenger 241 B Segrist is my great-great-great Grandpa. Passenger 242 Maria Ang?? Landenslerger Segrist is my great-great-great Grandma. Passenger 243 Johan Bernard Segrist is my great-great Grandpa. Passenger 244 Jacob Friedrich Segrist is a brother to Johan. Passenger 245 Wilhelm is a brother to Johan. B. Segrist died three days after arriving here. I was told the people who owned the ship were some of our relatives, but don't know yet for sure. I was also told an uncle took his wife and children. I am wondering if Passengers 246 and 247 might be them. Johan (known to me as John) was taught the butcher trade. When he got older he moved to Ohio and settled in Fulton Co., Wauseon, Ohio (near Toledo). Brother Wilhelm moved to Ohio as well but I don't know much about him or Jacob. Thanks for taking the time to put this on the internet. You have my full permission to put this information on the web. It might help me fill in my missing links. Linda (Segrist) Verlinde
