SPECIAL NOTE: #343/344 Bernd and Wupke Jansen/Janssen are great-great grandparents of the transcriber of this list; their daughter, transcriber’s great-grandmother, Grete, married passenger #349, Heinrich Eilts, at Zoar Lutheran Church, Perrysburg OH 8 September 1865. The Janssens and the Eilts homesteaded in Carroll County IA in 1868/70. In all other documents, the surname is spelled as "Janssen". The single "s" version is found only on this passenger list. The double "ss" is more common in the Ostfriesland area of Germany from where the Janssens came. #349 Passenger, Heinrich Eilts is the great-grandfather of Gene Janssen, transcriber of this list. Correspondence 11/27/2000 passengers 152-163 Thank you for your wonderful contribution in transcribing the manifest for the Argonaut on her trip brim Bremen to New York, arriving 24 Jun 1865. I also had family aboard this ship. Heinrich and Charlotte Kuhlmann and their 10 children. Our family history says that their youngest daughter, Mathilda, died on the voyage. As the story goes," there was an outbreak of measles onboard. Mathilda had a severe case. One day the hogs broke out of their pen aboard the ship and frightened Mathilda. She went into convulsions and soon died. She had to be buried at sea." I counted a total of 6 deaths on that voyage. The microfilm copy of the manifest at the National Archives shows Jesse (or Jette) Kuhlmann as dying, but makes no note about Mathilda. As the girls were only one month different in ages according to the manifest, it's probably an administrative error that was made at the time. The Kuhlmans settled in Barrington IL near Chicago. Charlotte was a midwife. My Kuhlmanns were from little towns known as Westenderfer-Landwehr and Deckbergen, Germany near the current town of Rinteln. The Schaumburg Auswander lists their date of departure from home as 18 Mar 1865. Joyce Thompson
Correspondence 07/18/02 passengers 152-163 Kohlmann I am also descended from the Kuhlmann's aboard ship. Please check out my website at Family Tree Thanks, Angie Bergman Correspondence added 4 August 2011 re: passengers #99-103 HARBERTS This is a short story about Dirk Harberts, Geeske Harberts, Wilhelm Harberts, Meeves Harberts, and Hebe Harberts, identified as passengers #99, #100, #101, #102, and #103, respectively. The Harberts family of five left Larrelt, Germany, for Bremen where they stepped aboard the Bark Argonaut. Upon reaching New York on June 24, 1865, the family traveled to Illinois, making their home in Ogle County. During their time in Illinois, passenger #101, Wilhelm Harberts, passed away in January, 1868. Shortly after the 1870 census was enumerated, the Harberts family left Illinois and settled near Hampton, Iowa. While in Iowa, Hebe Harberts (#103) married Meeves Groepel. And later, Meeves Harberts (#102) met and married Stina Heetland. The Harberts and Groepel families eventually moved from the Hampton area to Ackley, Iowa. Then the family slowly trickled off to Marion, South Dakota. First it was Meeves and Stina Harberts that left Ackley, settling in that small southeastern South Dakota community of Marion. While in Marion, Meeves Harberts became the proprietor of a hardware business, a business he owned and operated for 20 years. It was after Meeves and Stina Harberts’ departure to Marion that Geeske Okkels Harberts (#100) passed away. She met her maker on July 26, 1891, and was buried in Oak Wood Cemetery, Ackley. After Geeske Harberts’ death, Meeves and Hebe Harberts Groepel, along with Dirk Harberts (#99), sold their farm implements and moved to Marion where they joined Meeves and Stina Harberts. In Marion, Meeves and Hebe Groepel purchased a farm. The farm bordered on the southern city limits of Marion. Dirk Harberts passed away on September 24, 1900, and was laid to rest in Greenwood Cemetery, Marion. He was 83. Eventually, Meeves Harberts sold his hardware store and moved to Sibley, Iowa, where he owned and operated a furniture business. In 1909, Meeves and Hebe Groepel sold their farm and purchased a general merchandise store, a business which was eventually operated in Marion by three Groepel generations. In 1918, Meeves Groepel was called home, passing away on November 27. He was also buried in Greenwood Cemetery. Twenty years later, Hebe Harberts Groepel passed away. She died on July 3, 1938, and was laid to rest along side her husband in Greenwood Cemetery. Stina Harberts, Meeves Harberts’ wife, passed away on September 6, 1940. Her interment was in Holman Cemetery, Sibley, Iowa. The last of the five original Harberts clan, Meeves Harberts, passed away on April 1, 1953, at the age of 103 years. Meeves was laid to rest along side his wife, Stina, in Holman Cemetery, Sibley, Iowa. Anyone interested in this family can contact this contributor at Gregg Gropel
