I, W. Langer, Master of the Ger. SS America, do solemnly, sincerely,
and truly swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me,
and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the
Collection District of New York, is a full and perfect List of all the
Passengers taken on board of the said America at Hamburg from
which Port said America has now arrived; and that on the said List is
truly designated the age, the sex, and the occupation of each of said
Passengers, the part of the vessel occupied by each during the passage,
the country to which each belongs, and also the country of which it is
intended by each to become an inhabitant; and that said List or Manifest
truly sets forth the number of said Passengers who have died on said
voyage, and the names and ages of those who died, (signed) W. Langer So
help me, God.

List or Manifest of all the Passengers taken on board the Ger. SS America
whereof W. Langer is Master, from Hamburg burthen 1645 tons.
Columns represent: Passenger Number, Names, Age (years/months), Sex,
Occupation, The country to which they severally belong, The country in
which they intend to become inhabitants, Died on the voyage, Part of the
vessel occupied by each passenger during the voyage. No one is
indicated as having died on the voyage, so that column is not shown.
The country in which they intend to become inhabitants is United States
of America for everyone, so that column is not shown. All passengers
were in Steerage, evidently there were no Cabin passengers, so the
column for Part of the vessel occupied is not shown.
If there is a complete number which is not a multiple of 10 (45, 46,
211), it is there because it is at the bottom of one page or top of the
next page.
In the column for Died on the voyage, someone has numbered groups of
passengers from the same country (so that the first 7 are from Hamburg,
there's a 7; the next 3 are from Mecklenburg, there's a 3, etc.).
In "The country in which they intend to become inhabitants" very boldly
written down the length of the column is "United States of Amerika".

*Transcriber's Notes:
Sometimes "J" looks like J; sometimes "J" looks like F; sometimes "I"
looks like F. Capital "M" always has a small "o" at the end. Lower
case "b" looks like "le". A member of the ISTG group from Germany says
that the writer has mixed latin script with german elements, so what
looks like Wilhelm one time, looks like Wilfalm the next time, and what
is Saxony one time is Saxonia another time. Also, there may have been
more than one writer of the list. Variations in spelling of countries
are as they appear on the manifest.
There are occasional umlauts and other diacritical marks which are not
shown here due to the limitations of some computers to interpret them
properly. I am not indicating in these notes each time they appear
because sometimes they may be just spots on the copy. If you need to
check on them, please email the transcriber. Specifically, Muller, Moller,
Colpin, Brugmann, Schroder, Thormalen(over the "a"), Kruger, Rohuer,
Kroger.
There are some names that look distinctly like Wilfalm or Wilfrem.
However, I have been told that they are variations of the spelling of
Wilhelm.
There are times when an obvious error exists, like Otto, Female, Son. I
am writing it as it is, as close as I can to what you would see. We try
to show the list as close to the original as possible.
Towards the end, from #544 to #633, there are water stains that have
made the ink run, so the names are not very legible.
#358 could be Hanf
#374 Last name is Kunz or Kunze
#399 The first letter of last name is an Old German "S".
#402 Is a daughter, but the writer shows "s" for Son on that line
#420 Sex is dittoed down from Female
#447 Last name could be Hadmer or Hadiner
#453 Sex is dittoed from Female above.
#510 is written Wilhel, then the "me" is above a period, which is
typical of abbreviations of the time. The F for female is written, not
dittoed, the S for son is dittoed; therefore I believe this is a female
named Wilhelmine.
#544-548 ink is very smeared over the first names.
#569, #619, #620, #632, occupation could be Bager, Lerager -- illegible.
#588-592 ink is very smeared over the first names.
#596-621 ink is very smeared over numbers, names and ages, so many names
that are complete are best guess.
#599 First letter of first name is I or J, First letter of last name is
P or R.
#621 Last name is either Lohaker or Lohaher
#628-633 ink is very smeared over names.
#675 Last name could be Grudel.

Passengers #364-372. The name is actually Röhner. Joh. and Theresa (nee Aust)
are my great-grandparents. Joh. was known as Franz. They settled in Dubuque,
Iowa, and had another son, William, in Dubuque. Several of the sons - Ernst,
Franz, Carl, and William - moved to California, probably in the early 1900s.
The ages of some of the children are not correct. We surmise that the fare
might have been less for young children, and so the ages were "reduced."
Passengers #376-378. Mathilde Gross was Theresa Rohner's sister.
