I, W. Langer, Master of the Ger. SS America, do solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of New York, is a full and perfect List of all the Passengers taken on board of the said America at Hamburg from which Port said America has now arrived; and that on the said List is truly designated the age, the sex, and the occupation of each of said Passengers, the part of the vessel occupied by each during the passage, the country to which each belongs, and also the country of which it is intended by each to become an inhabitant; and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of said Passengers who have died on said voyage, and the names and ages of those who died, (signed) W. List or Manifest of all the Passengers taken on board the Ger. SS America whereof W. Langer is Master, from Hamburg burthen 1645 tons.
Columns represent: Passenger Number, Names, Age (years/months), Sex, Occupation, The country to which they severally belong, The country in which they intend to become inhabitants, Died on the voyage, Part of the vessel occupied by each passenger during the voyage. No one is indicated as having died on the voyage, so that column is not shown. The country in which they intend to become inhabitants is United States of America for everyone, so that column is not shown. All passengers were in Steerage, evidently there were no Cabin passengers, so the column for Part of the vessel occupied is not shown. If there is a complete number which is not a multiple of 10 (45, 46, 211), it is there because it is at the bottom of one page or top of the next page. In the column for Died on the voyage, someone has numbered groups of passengers from the same country (so that the first 7 are from Hamburg, there's a 7; the next 3 are from Mecklenburg, there's a 3, etc.). In "The country in which they intend to become inhabitants" very boldly written down the length of the column is "United States of Amerika".

Capital "M" always has a small "o" at the end. Lower case "b" looks like "le". A member of the ISTG group from Germany says that the writer has mixed latin script with german elements, so what looks like Wilhelm one time, looks like Wilfalm the next time, and what is Saxony one time is Saxonia another time. Also, there may have been more than one writer of the list. Variations in spelling of countries are as they appear on the manifest. There are occasional umlauts and other diacritical marks which are not shown here due to the limitations of some computers to interpret them properly. I am not indicating in these notes each time they appear because sometimes they may be just spots on the copy. If you need to check on them, please email the transcriber. Specifically, Muller, Moller, Colpin, Brugmann, Schroder, Thormalen(over the "a"), Kruger, Rohuer, Kroger. There are some names that look distinctly like Wilfalm or Wilfrem. However, I have been told that they are variations of the spelling of Wilhelm. There are times when an obvious error exists, like Otto, Female, Son. I am writing it as it is, as close as I can to what you would see. We try to show the list as close to the original as possible. Towards the end, from #544 to #633, there are water stains that have made the ink run, so the names are not very legible. #102 could be Ochsauer or Ochseven #114 Sex is dittoed from M, Occupation is definitely Woman #141 Last name could be Sazan #148 First name looks like Bunr #161 Tailor is spelled as it is written "taylar" #184 Age was 40, then 20 overwritten on it. #194 Last name starts with J or I #227 Sex is dittoed from F above it, it does say son, first names of this and mother above it are spelled exactly alike. #242-255 - Country of Ungaria is mix of German "Ungard" (for Hungary) and "Hungaria"; we assume the writer means Hungary. #312 could be Gauschow #315 could be Gesten #328 looks like "Gr" and then 7 humps #342 could be Suhl or Luhl Correspondence 05/28/2005 passengers #161-164 Steingusaner/Steingassner Ships passengers #161, 162, 163, 164, Anton(ius), Therese, Rosalie, Johann Steingusaner (Steingassner) are my ancestors. The family settled in Kansas City, Kansas, where many Austrians had settled. Johann is my grandfather. In 1902-1906, he served in the US Navy, and circled the globe in his four year hitch. (I have written about his exploits in a 35 page article, which list all his ports of call, the sights he saw, and the action he experienced, in his circumnavigation of the world.) He returned to Kansas City, Kansas and married his sweetheart, Gertrude Victoria Mueller, in October of 1907. From this union, there were 8 children. The oldest was my father, Leonard. Johann worked almost 30 years as a letter carrier for the Postal Service, retiring in 1936. He died of a stroke in June, 1948. The last name was changed to Stonestreet in 1918. There are still many Steingassners that live in Vienna, Austria, from whence they emigrated. There is a world famous veterinarian, named Hans Martin Steingassner, and a Steingassner brick manufacturing company, located close to Vienna. Antonius became a boiler operator in a meat packing house, and died in April, 1894. His wife, Therese, had the maiden name of Dittmeyer. I am still tracing the family, and plan to visit Vienna in the near future, to meet some of the Steingassner relatives. Leonard Stonestreet
