Transcriber's Notes:
An asterisk (*) indicates the original recorder made an omission or error, or is used by the transcriber to call your
attention to additional information in these transcriber's notes.
A question mark (?) indicates a word or letters the transcriber could not read due to quality of original document or
handwriting of the recorder.
A caret (^) in a name indicates the letter(s) following the caret was superscripted by the recorder. This usually means
the name or occupation was abbreviated and the raised letter is the last letter of the word.
The transcriber has numbered the passengers consecutively in the order they were listed on the manifest. The passengers
were numbered by the recorder, but the numbering sequence was changed following passenger #65 Chr. Streuber. The number
of the next passenger was changed (overwritten) from #66 to #64, and the next passenger (Emil Reicharelt) was designated
#65, and subsequent passengers were all numbered consecutively until the last passenger (H. Loning) whose number on the
manifest was #133, but on this transcription he is #135. Why did the recorder change the numbering sequence? A possible
reason may be found with the two passengers, #8 and #47, whose entries were crossed off with the note "returned" in the
Residence column. These two passengers probably did not disembark at New York, and the recorder may have thought it
prudent to subtract two numbers from the total. This explanation is only an idea posed by the transcriber, as there was
no reason stated on the manifest.
Sex column: the recorder wrote male, female or "Do" (meaning ditto, same as previous). For formatting reasons the
transcriber has used M or F.
Country where passengers severally belong (Residence): If United States was listed, the transcriber has used the
abbreviation "USA" for formatting reasons.
Destination: The United States was listed for all passengers so the column has been omitted.
Died: No passengers died on the voyage so the column has been omitted.
Part of the Vessel occupied: The recorder listed this information in two places - once in the Name column above the
first passenger to occupy each class, and also vertically in large script in the last column on each page intending to
apply the information to all passengers on the page. Since the information in the last column was redundant and the
vertical writing cannot be duplicated here, that column has been omitted.
Information has been transcribed as seen, regardless of the spelling, abbreviation, punctuation or capitalization used
on the manifest by the recorder. Any exceptions are explained in these Notes. For example, the recorder was inconsistent
in using upper or lower case leading letters in words that are usually capitalized. He used lower case letters for most
occupations (clerk, farmer, merchant), and lower case "f" as the leading letter in given names (ferd and franz) but when
writing surnames he alternated between upper and lower case "F" and "f" (Frost and freyburger).
8 F. Eugster was one of two passengers whose name and other information (including the passenger number) were
crossed out; an additional word: "returned" was written in the country of residence column. No explanation was
given, but the transcriber believes this means Mr. Eugster did not enter the United States; either he did not
board the ship, or else he actually "returned" to Germany for some unknown reason. No age was listed for Mr.
Eugster; "Germany" was written vertically in the country of residence column before the word "returned" was
written in that column.
13 Information does not ring true for passenger #13. The sex (M) was written as ditto mark. If sex and the name Otto
are both correct, the passenger was not the wife of passenger #12 William Kobow and the occupation column was
wrong. But if #13 was the wife of William (and the ditto was a mistake) then "Otto" must be an abbreviation for a
female name. No names come to mind.
20 In surname Muller the "u" is umlaut.
47 J. H. Sebelin was one of two passengers whose name and other information (including the passenger number) were
crossed out; an additional word: "returned" was written in the country of residence column. No explanation was
given, but the transcriber believes this means Mr. Sebelin did not enter the United States; either he did not
board the ship, or else he actually "returned" to Germany for some unknown reason. A bracket (for "Germany) was
in the country of residence column before the word "returned" was written in that column.
52 The recorder spelled the country of residence Danmark.
54 In given name Raschen the "a" is umlaut.
58 The recorder spelled the country of residence Danmark.
60 In surname Lunsemann the "u" is umlaut.
61 The bracket in the country of residence column does not cover Mr Rang's row so it is not clear if he was from
"Germany" with the previous passengers, or from the USA with the following passengers. If he was travelling
with #63 Leonh. Rang who was clearly from the USA, then one may assume Frdr Rang was also from the USA.
72 Beginning of surname is partially obstructed by loop from previous name. Instead of "H" name might start with
"L" or "St" thus name could be Laessler or Staessler.
77 In surname Gopel the "o" is umlaut.
85 The recorder spelled the country of residence Danmark.
86-87 In surname the 5th letter might be "c" thus name could be Behneke.
89 Surname might be Lowisohn.
90 The bracket in the country of residence column extends downward, meaning Mr Mendelsohn was from the USA with
the following passengers.
93 No age was recorded for Mina Wittig. The bracket in the country of residence column extends downward, meaning
she was from Germany with the following passengers.
96 The bracket in the country of residence column extends down, meaning Anna Wuest was from the USA with the
following passengers.
102 The recorder spelled the occupation ingeneer.
103 Surname might be Mundel.
110 The recorder entered Sussex in the occupation column; there was no occupation listed.
111 Did the recorder misspell Plunkett?
120 The sex "male" was written out (not a ditto) for this child whose name was Agnes.
123 An additional letter between the "i" and "e" in given name may be partially hidden by a crease, thus Louise is
possible, which makes more sense for female passenger.
126 In surname Gopel the "o" is umlaut.
128 No age was recorded for Mr Fischer.
129 No given name or age were recorded for Mr Cohlmann. Did recorder misspell Kohlmann?
133 There is a crease over this passenger's surname making it difficult to read. After "Sch" the letter could be
"w" or "r" followed by one or two vowels followed by a consonant with a loop above the line - either "b" or "d."
There could be one or more additional letters at the end of the name hidden in the crease. The name could be
Schwab or Schroder but other combinations are possible. The recorder spelled the occupation "officier."
134 Beginning of surname is partially obscured by a smudge. Could be "Gl" instead of "f," so name might be
Glaserobert.
