Transcriber's Notes:
An asterisk (*) indicates the original recorder made an omission or error, or is used by the transcriber to call your
attention to additional information in these transcriber's notes.
A question mark (?) indicates a word or letters the transcriber could not read due to quality of original document or
handwriting of the recorder.
The transcriber has numbered the passengers consecutively in the order they were listed on the manifest, although the
recorder did not number any passengers.
In the sex column the recorder wrote female or male or used a ditto mark. The transcriber has used M or F throughout
this transcription for formatting purposes.
Babies were recorded as "Suckling" - for each baby the word Suckling was written in extremely large script scrawled
across the page from the Age column to the Destination column, with no other entries made (except sex of some babies)
in any of the columns. For these babies the transcriber has written the word Suckling in the Remarks column where it
best fits.
Ditto marks in the occupation column: after listing an occupation for head of a family the recorder often used ditto
marks indiscriminately in the occupation column for consecutive passengers (including females and children) until a
different occupation was written for the next adult. A ditto should mean the passenger had the same occupation as the
previous passenger or the last adult male. This usually was incorrect for females and children and the best explanation
is that the recorder was careless when using ditto marks in this column.
Country to which passengers severally belong (Origin or Birth country): Germany was listed for all passengers except
five who were from the United States, so the column has been omitted. For passengers from the U.S. (#1-3, #14 and #272)
the transcriber has included this information in their Remarks column and in Notes below under their passenger numbers.
Destination column: instead of recording the "Country in which they intend to become inhabitants" the recorder listed
the city or state where passengers indicated they were going. This information is more helpful for researchers.
Died column: Two passengers died on the voyage (#57 Anna Meyerdiercks, and #166 Gottfried Hanske); the transcriber has
added a note in the Remarks column of their listings, and the "Died" column has been omitted.
Part of vessel occupied: This information was recorded in the last column on the manifest (in most cases with a ditto
mark). For formatting and space reasons the transcriber has inserted this information in the first column above the name
of the first passenger who occupied each class. The column has been omitted and replaced with a Remarks column for other
information described in these Notes.
Information has been transcribed as seen, regardless of the spelling, abbreviation, punctuation or capitalization used
on the manifest by the recorder. Any exceptions are explained in these Notes.
1-3 These passengers were from the United States. In surname Dascher the "a" is umlaut.
10 Spelling of occupation Lensmant fairly clear. Transcriber is not familiar with this occupation. Was this
related to early photography?
12 In given name 4th letter is partially obscured by loop (g) from previous passenger's name. Letter might be "s"
so name could be Carsten.
14 This passenger was from the United States.
16 The "a" is umlaut in Bahr.
24 Surname might be Wessman.
29 The "u" is umlaut in Jurgen.
34 The "a" is umlaut in Fantje.
36 The "a" is umlaut in Mavers.
45-46 Did recorder mean Margarethe?
48-52 The surnames for these passengers were all written out (no dittos) as "Zimerman," with a "dash" above the first
"m" and the "n" in each name. The dash indicates the recorder omitted one m from a double "mm" and one n from
a double "nn." This was sometimes done for space reasons which seems to be the case here because the names
filled up the column. The transcriber has written the surnames as intended, i.e., Zimmermann.
53 Surname might be Foven.
56 The first "a" is umlaut in Kashamner.
59 Did recorder use "v.d." to abbreviate "van der" in the surname, as in van der Scheer?
61 Surname is probably Betjemann. A long dash was placed over the "n" at end of surname. See Note above for
passengers #48-52.
65 In surname Base the first vowel is umlaut. Also, first vowel might be "o" thus name could be Bose.
70 Age might be 23.
73 The "u" is umlaut in Luder.
88 Did recorder misspell Seuss?
89 Surname might be Abell. Questionable letters in occupation hard to read. Might be brickner, same as passenger
#102 where the writing is very clear. Transcriber is not familiar with this occupation. Is it someone who
works with bricks?
91 Did recorder mean Margarethe?
105 Did recorder mean Barbara?
108 Did recorder mean Margarethe?
116 Surname might be Zucker.
119 The "o" is umlaut in Schopner.
120-130 The "o" is umlaut in Rollig.
134-139 The "o" is umlaut in Stober.
157 Given name might be Prangolt.
157-162 The "a" is umlaut in Patzold.
158 Did recorder mean Rachel?
167 Ernstine is an unlikely name for a male, so the name or the sex may be wrong. For a female the occupation
may be disregarded; see Transcriber's Note above regarding recorder using ditto marks in occupation column.
179 The "a" is umlaut in Schafer.
181-188 The "u" is umlaut in Muller.
188 Given name might be Tela.
203 Did recorder mean Charlotte?
204-205 Twins?
208 Did recorder mean Margarethe?
212-218 The "o" is umlaut in Bockmann and Dohmel.
220 Surname might be Vippach.
222 Did recorder mean Barbara?
223 Surname might be Rolfs.
225 Surname might be Wiltner, Wilsner.
227 Given name might be Bertus.
229 Destination "Pennselvania" as spelled for this passenger; listing for other family members was ditto mark.
237 Surname might be Klaudi.
238 The "u" is umlaut in Muller. Note the recorded did not umlaut "u" in Muller for passenger #239.
240 The first "u" is umlaut in Hulsebusch.
242 Did recorder mean Margarethe?
246 Occupation as spelled.
249 Surname might be Dantjer.
250 The "u" is umlaut in Lubben.
259 The "o" is umlaut in Koster.
262-263 The "u" is umlaut in Kluber.
266 Surname might be Siemen.
268,271 Did recorder mean Barbara?
272 This passenger was from the United States.
