Transcriber's Notes:
* An asterisk (*) indicates the original recorder made an omission or error, or is used by the transcriber to call your
attention to additional information below in the transcriber's notes or passenger notes.
* A question mark (?) means a letter or number could not be read due to condition of the manifest or handwriting of
the recorder.
* A caret (^) on this transcription means the letter following the caret was raised (superscripted) and underlined. In
writing superscripting was usually used in an abbreviated word. On this manifest it was only used in the statement
signed by the deputy collector: in "22^d" (meaning 22nd) the "d" was superscripted; in "Tho^s" (meaning Thomas) the
"s" was superscripted.
* Information has been transcribed as seen, regardless of the spelling, abbreviation, capitalization or punctuation
used on the manifest. The recorder's handwriting was clear unless there is a comment to the contrary in these Notes.
See the next two paragraphs for examples of probable errors by the recorder.
* Examples of spelling errors; recorder may have spelled these words phonetically:
- Name of this vessel: Schip
- Places: Libanon, Zurick, Friedenwalde/Fridewald, Behmen, Thanhein, Sudlohne, Anrothe, Erblach, Wiesenhau, Nework,
Wisconsen, Cummerland, Menesoda, Milwauky, St Luis, Oheio, Waschington.
- Occupations: Survenmaid, Soljer.
* Places that cannot be located (may be recorder spelling errors):
Perro, Molkenfritz, Ladostheim, Gorxner, Hoelfel, Muscado, Gekuck, Staffeshein, Wrichhausen, Herlensker, Maierland,
Deutsch Corne.
* Arrival date: There is conflicting information regarding date of arrival at Baltimore. The National Archives Microfilm
Publications cover sheet says the Ferdinand arrived in Baltimore on July 22, 1861, and the sworn statement signed by
Captain Bullerdick also was dated July 22, 1861. But the "Alien passengers" statement at the top of the manifest (which
may have been completed by the recorder) says the ship landed at Baltimore from Bremen on the "20 day of Juni 1861."
A possible explanation is that the 20th of June was the date the ship departed from Bremen.
* Passenger numbers: 267 passengers were numbered on the manifest; the transcriber has used the same numbers.
* Age: this column on the manifest was not divided by years/months. The transcriber added this division in order to show
the age, in months, of babies who whose age was listed as fractions.
* Country Claiming Allegiance: the recorder used this column to list the destination city or state.
* Passenger Summary was hand written on the manifest beneath passenger #267 and signed by the Captain as shown above.
* Children who died: The Passenger Summary states 7 children died. Unfortunately they are not identified on the list of
passengers.
4-5 In surname the "a" is umlaut.
10 Spelling of Molkenfritz is fairly clear but this place cannot be located by the transcriber.
19 The page is torn across row #19, making some information difficult to read. First initial of given name could
be H, surname could be Ruhe (especially if this family is related to passenger #37 whose surname, origin and
destination look the same). Occupation cannot be read. Assume passenger is male as the next passenger is
identified as wife. Destination is partially visible, best guess is Cincinnati.
20-21 Surname and destination were entered as dittos under passenger #19.
31-32 The page is torn across the row with information for passenger #31. Obscured letters in given name have no
loops above or below line; Johanna? First letter of surname could be L or S: Seitz is possible. Questionable
letters of country name have no loops above or below the line. The surname and country information affects
passenger #32 whose surname, country of birth and residence were entered as dittos.
34 Birth place Behmen likely an erroneous spelling of Bohmen.
39-40 Questionable letters in country name look most like "Jh" or "Th" but place names with these spellings cannot
be located by the transcriber.
42-43 Birth place spelling has "n" at end; probably should be "m": Thanheim. Spelling of destination Gekuck is clear
but this place cannot be located by the transcriber.
49 Given name Frid does not have period at end but is probably an abbreviation. Fridolin? Birth place spelling is
clear but probably should not have "e" at end; applies to all members of the Lamping family.
52 Questionable letters in given name are obscured by a crease in the manifest; cannot be read.
58 Birth place spelling of Wiesenhau is clear but recorder may have missed "s" at end. Is soljer phonetic spelling
for soldier?
59 Spelling of Staffeshein is clear but this place cannot be located by the transcriber.
60 Spelling of Wrichhausen is clear but this place cannot be located by the transcriber.
69 Spelling of Hoelfel is clear but this place cannot be located by the transcriber.
73 Spellings of Herlensker, Herlenker, Maierland are clear but these places cannot be located by the transcriber.
74 Spelling of 2nd word in birth place & residence is either Corne or Covne but neither place can be located by
the transcriber.
79 Spelling of Gorxner is clear but this place cannot be located by the transcriber.
82 In given name 1st "t" is not crossed, so looks like Berlholt, but Bertholt is more likely.
93 Did recorder reverse the 2nd and 3rd letters of surname? Jarl may be more likely.
137 Clear "a" at end of given name Franzica. Could be a spelling error if a boy. Maybe a daughter not a son?
154 Clear "l" written after "A" in given name Aldalbert.
158 Clear "l" written after "A" in given name Aldolpf.
162 Clear "l" written after "A" in given name Aldalb.
172 Recorder forgot to enter ditto for surname, but it is likely Schulz because she appears to be the "wife" of
passenger 171.
178 Did recorder leave off extra "s" at end of surname - Hess? Family members 179-181 had ditto for surname.
196 Spelling of destination Muscado is clear but place cannot be located by the transcriber.
213 Destination Menesoda probably phonetic for Minnesota.
240 Clear "a" written at end of given name Francica. Probable spelling error if a boy. Maybe a daughter not a son?
249 Spelling of birth place/residence is clear but probably error. Anrath?
252 Spelling of birth place/residence is clear but probably error. Erbach?
254-255 Questionable letters in birth place/residence are obscured by a crease in the manifest and cannot be read.
235 Clear "l" after "A" written in given name Aldolp.
