Transcriber's Notes:
An asterisk (*) indicates the original recorder made an omission or error, or is used by the transcriber to call your
attention to additional information in these transcriber's notes.
A question mark (?) indicates a word or letters the transcriber could not read due to quality of original document or
handwriting of the recorder.
Passengers were not numbered on the manifest; the transcriber has numbered the passengers consecutively in the order
they were recorded on the manifest.
In the sex column the recorder wrote female or male or used a ditto mark. The transcriber has used M or F throughout
this transcription for formatting purposes.
Country where passengers severally belong (Origin): All passengers except one were from Germany, so that column has been
omitted from this transcription. See the note below for passenger #14 who was from St. Louis.
Country where passengers intend to become inhabitants (Destination): The recorder listed the city or state and this
information is actually more helpful to researchers than "USA" which was often used on manifests.
No deaths were recorded on the voyage, so the "Died" column has been omitted from this transcription.
Part of vessel occupied: There was no entry in this column for passengers #50 through 96.
Information has been transcribed as seen, regardless of the spelling, abbreviation, punctuation or capitalization used
on the manifest by the recorder. Any exceptions are explained in these Notes.
1 The entry for this female passenger was crossed out, which probably means she was not on board when the vessel
arrived in New York. Perhaps she disembarked in New Orleans, or maybe she did board the vessel in Bremen.
2 In surname the "u" is umlaut.
5, 11 Is it possible these passengers were traveling together? Their surnames are very close, and a "K" may look like
an "R." Surname of passenger #5 starts with "K" and surname of passenger #11 clearly starts with "R." The recorder
who wrote this manifest had good handwriting but if he made a spelling error based on a document he was reading,
then #5 could be Joseph Ruhland or #11 could be Cath Kuhland.
14 Peter Johanne is the only passenger not from Germany. His listed "country" of origin was St Louis.
21 What looks like a large "p" at the end of surname could be "ss" that was written like "fs" thus: Hansess.
51-52 In surname the "o" is umlaut.
59 In surname the "u" is umlaut.
65 In surname the "o" is umlaut.
66-68 In surname the "u" is umlaut in both places it appears in the name.
71 The first digit of the age is covered by a scribble and it cannot be read.
76 The second digit of age is not clear, could be 1 or 7, thus age is either 21 or 27.
80 In surname the "o" is umlaut.
86-89 In surname the "u" is umlaut.
95 Given name abbreviation for Wilhelm?
102 Given name abbreviation for Heinrich?
103 Given name abbreviation for Andrew?
111 Is destination a phonetic spelling for Brighton?
Correspondence added 03 May 2012 Passengers #66-68 BUESCHSENSCHUETZ, #64 KNOCKE, #65 SCHOENWEISS.
Passengers #66, 67,and 68 were my great great grandparents, Elizabeth and Johannes Buechsenschuetz
and their only child, listed as John, but his name was actually Leonard.
The small family came from a very small village in Vohl by the name of Harbshausen (on the Eder
River), Germany. The family settled in Prairietown, IL.T he parents are buried in St. John's
cemetery there. Leonard married Rosina Schmitter (exact birthplace unknown but probably
Switzerland) in 1863 and they later moved to the community of Nokomis, Il where they are buried.
My grandfather, William Daniel Edward Buechsenschuetz was born in 1874 and also lived in Nokomis.
He married Anna Adden whose family was from the Remels area. That Adden family is recorded in
the records of the church in Remels.
Passengers #64, Christian Knocke and #65, Daniel Schoenweiss
also lived in the Prairietown area so I am assuming they were acquainted with the
Buechsenschuetzes but I do not know for certain. They definitely knew each other well in
Prairietown as the families served as baptism sponsors and later, all intermarried.
