Transcriber's Notes:
An asterisk (*) indicates the original recorder made an omission or error, or is used by the transcriber to call your
attention to additional information below in these transcriber's notes.
A question mark (?) indicates letter(s) cannot be read due to condition of the manifest or recorder's handwriting.
A caret (^) in a name or other word indicates the letter following the caret was superscripted by the recorder. This
usually means the word is abbreviated and the raised letter is the last letter of the word.
Spelling. Recorder used non-American spelling for occupations shumaker & missionair, and for States Pensylvanien &
Minesota.
Abbreviated given names. The following full names are suggestions for names abbreviated on the manifest:
And, Andr = Andrew
Aug = August Doroth = Dorothea Herm = Hermann
Barb = Barbara Elisab = Elisabeth Joh = John or Johann
Cath, Cathar = Catharine Ferd = Ferdinand Jos = Joseph
Chr, Christ = Christine (female) Freriks = Frederiks Marg = Marg or Margaretha
Chr, Christ = Christian (male) Fried, Friedr, Frdr = Friedrich Mich = Michael
Dan^l = Daniel Gerh = Gerhard Pet = Peter
Diedr = Diedrich Gottl = Gottlieb Sebas = Sebastian
Heinr = Heinrich Wilh = Wilhelm
Passengers were not numbered on the manifest. The transcriber has numbered the passengers consecutively in the order
they were listed by the recorder. The baby who was born and died on the voyage is #145 for reference purposes but on
the manifest the baby was listed on the same line as the mother Sophie Bullenbacher #144.
Sex column. Recorder listed the gender for passengers whose sex was different from the previous passenger. If the gender
was the same as the previous passenger the recorder usually left this column blank (but sometimes made a ditto mark).
If a passenger was the first entry on any page of the manifest the recorder did list the gender.
Destination column (Country to which they intend to become inhabitants): the recorder listed the State where passengers
intended to reside and this is actually more helpful to researchers than the country (United States) which was usually
written in this column on other manifests. On pages 1-3 of the manifest (passengers #1-120) the recorder used a squiggly
vertical ditto line to indicate "same as previous" passenger. On pages 4-5 (passengers 121-200) after writing a State
for one passenger the recorder left this column blank and did not make another entry until there was a change in the
destination State. The transcriber believes the blank spaces mean the same as ditto marks, and that the recorder simply
neglected to insert the ditto marks on pages 4-5.
Died on the voyage. The baby (#145) who was born on the voyage also died on the voyage. Since there were no deaths of
original passengers the Died column has been omitted and a Note added below for baby Bullenbacher #145.
Part of the vessel occupied. Recorder listed this information in the last column. For formatting purposes the transcriber
has inserted this information in the first column above the name of the first passenger to occupy each class: passengers
#1-13 occupied I (First) Cabin, passengers #14-38 occupied II (Second) Cabin, and passengers #39-200 occupied the part
of the vessel known as Between Deck.
Unless otherwise explained in these transcriber's notes, information has been transcribed as seen, regardless of
spelling, abbreviations, punctuation or capitalization used on the manifest.
6 Occupation column: "Manufacturer of Whips" was written out; on this list the transcriber shortened this to
"Maker of Whips" for space reasons.
17 In surname Junger the "u" is umlaut.
18 In surname (which might be Sturmer) the "u" is umlaut.
20 Surname might be Dichr.
25 In surname Schontag the "u" is umlaut.
29 Probable recorder error. Surname of Catharina was written with double "ss" (Krausskopf) instead of Krauskopf
which was spelled out (not ditto) for other family members.
43-48 In surname Bruning the "u" is umlaut.
59-60 These passengers were probably together and likely had the same surname but the surnames were spelled as listed
here. There is a "dot" over #60 but not over #59. If the same name, #59 might be Priell or #60 might be Prull.
66 Surname might be Reicheln.
74 1st letters of given name might be Fe instead of Ja, thus Feke is possible name.
82 In surname Muller the "u" is umlaut.
118 Leading letters of given name hard to read. Might be "Ja" (instead of Ti) so Jane is possible name.
120 Given name is faded and hard to read. 1st letter might be R and 3rd-4th letters might be "ch" so name could be
Riche? Other combinations are possible: Kiche, Rieme. All possibilities are unusual.
145 This unnamed baby, born to Mrs Bullenbacher, died the day after it was born, per Note signed by Captain Probst
at the end of the manifest. No gender or dates of birth or death were recorded for the baby.
148 Age is hard to read. There are two numbers after the 7 in the year column, so age looks like 712. This may mean
7 1/2, which fits the age progression (older to younger) used to list children in a family. The transcriber has
converted this to 7 yr 6 mos.
158 Age was written in the year column as a fraction 3/4; the transcriber has converted this to 9 months.
171 In surname Sturz the "u" is umlaut.
178 Matthias?
194 In surname Schonberger the "u" is umlaut.
