*(Summary) Total number of all Passengers on board the "Auguste": One hundred and fifty-two/152,
whereof: One hundred and twelf fullgrown persons; Thirty-one children; and nine babies. One of the
Between-Deck passengers died during the passage, also one baby of the second-cabin passengers. One of
them is citizen of Unit. States. 1st Aug. was born a little boy.
Transcriber's Notes:
An asterisk (*) indicates the original recorder made an omission or error, or is used by the transcriber
to call your attention to additional information below in the transcriber's notes or passenger notes.
A question mark (?) indicates a letter or number that could not be read due to condition of the manifest
or handwriting of the original recorder.
Information has been transcribed as seen, regardless of the spelling, abbreviations, capitalization or
punctuation used by the recorder on the manifest. For example: "St. Lewis" and "Pittsbourg" were written
on the manifest.
Passenger numbers: The transcriber has numbered 152 passengers consecutively in the order they appeared on
the manifest. The recorder numbered the passengers on the manifest as follows: 1 (First Cabin passenger),
1-26 (Second Cabin passengers), 1-125 (Between Deck passengers).
*City (State) where passengers intend to become inhabitants: On the manifest form the word "Country" is
printed in the destination column heading, but instead of writing "U.S." for all passengers as many
recorders did for other ships, the recorder of this ship entered the city and state, which is actually
more helpful for researchers.
*Boxes column: This column heading was not on the manifest form, but was handwritten by the recorder. It
is unknown what the dollar sign ($) means after the word Boxes. The transcriber assumes the numbers
entered for various individuals or families refer to the number of boxes and not to the dollar value of
the boxes. It is also assumed that the brackets on the right of the manifest (actually on both sides of
the "Died" column, were used to indicate that the boxes belonged to bracketed families or groups of
passengers traveling together.
*The Summary (above, shown after passenger #152) was attached to the passenger list. The summary was
handwritten but not signed; it may have been written by the Ship's Master who was obligated to report such
things. Note that the summary said one of the passengers who died was a citizen of the United States, but
the recorded entries for the two passengers who "Died" said they were from elsewhere: #25 August Borgman
was from Hannover and #32 J. B. Stewering was from Prussia.
6: in surname the u is umlaut.
22: age could be 28.
25: in the "Died" column the full entry reads: "Died during the passage." See the Summary at the end of
the passenger list above. August Borgman was the "baby of the second-cabin passengers."
32: in the "Died" column, the full entry reads: "Died on the passage." See the Summary at the end of the
passenger list above. J.B. Stewering was the Between-Decks passenger.
36: destination was spelled St. Lewis.
39: in surname the o is umlaut.
41-42: in surname the u is umlaut.
60: caret (^) in given name means the last letter was superscripted and underlined. Superscripting was
used in writing for abbreviating words and names. In this case, since the passenger is female, the
name is probably Wilhilmine.
72: questionable leading letter of surname is difficult to read because the recorder sometimes, but not
always, used extra loops and flourishes on upper case letters and specific upper case letters
appeared different in different names on this manifest. Possibly "E" or "P" thus: Eisengart or
Pisengart.
80: in surname the o is umlaut.
95-96: the handwriting is clear, the surname ends with "ek" but if the recorder spelled the name wrong
it might be Schroeck or Schrock which are more common.
117: in surname the 2nd o is umlaut; this is probably a mistake as one might expect the 1st o to be
umlaut in this name.
130: in surname the 7th letter is partially obstructed by a letter in previous row. It is either k or d
so name could be Schwender.
140: The written entry for this passenger states: "One Baby, aged 7 weeks, M" then ditto marks were
entered in two columns meaning same as previous passenger for Country of origin (Reuss-Greitz) and
Destination (New York). The baby's given name and surname are not written and his age is not
certain. As to his name: although not stated, the transcriber believes the baby is the child of
Caroline Meister (thus baby boy Meister) because he is listed immediately after the youngest-named
Meister child and also because the Meister family members were the only passengers from Reuss-
Greitz who were going to New York. His age is more problematic. The ship arrived August 5th; if
this baby is 7 weeks old as shown by the recorder, then he is not the baby referred to in the
Summary at the end of the passenger list: "1st Aug. was born a little boy." But if he is the baby
referred to in the Summary then he is four days old (not 7 weeks); either the Summary got his birth
date wrong or the recorder erred when listing "7 weeks" as the age. If the information for this
little boy is correct on the manifest, and the information in the Summary is also correct, then
this little boy is not the baby referred to in the Summary, which means there was another baby on
the ship who was not identified on the passenger list.
143: the questionable leading letter of surname is difficult to read because the recorder was not
consistent in forming upper case letters. Top of the letter looks like an upside down pitchfork
with two tines, then the long handle drops down to the left in long loop extending around the name
in next row. Educated guess because of its size, shape and other letters written by the recorder:
"J" or "Z". 2nd letter (a vowel) is squished but looks most like "a" - thus Jaff or Zaff?
Apparently this passenger was traveling with passengers 141-142 (the Webers) and 144 (Kathar.
Bathan) because 3 boxes of luggage were bracketed as belonging to passengers 141-144, who were all
from Bavaria and intending to reside in Baltimore.
144: surname could be Bathon.
