Ship Arcole
I, S. P. Crafts, Master of the Ship Arcole do solemnly, sincerely and truly swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of New York, is a full and perfect list of all the passengers taken on board of the said Ship at Hamburg from which port said Ship has now arrived; and that on said list is truly designated the age, the sex, and the occupation of each of said passengers, the part of the vessel occupied by each during the passage, the country to which each belongs, and also the country of which it is intended by each to become an inhabitant; and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of said passengers who have died on said voyage, and the names and ages of those who died.
So help me God (Signature) S. P. Crafts
Sworn to this 13^th day July 1861, before me (Signature) GW Embree D Col

Transcriber's Notes:
An asterisk (*) indicates the original recorder made an omission or error, or is used by the transcriber to call your
attention to additional information in these transcriber's notes.
A question mark (?) indicates a word or letters the transcriber could not read due to quality of original document or
handwriting of the recorder. On this manifest, in general the handwriting of the recorder is very good.
A caret (^) in a word indicates the letter following the caret was superscripted by the recorder. This usually means
the word was abbreviated and the raised letter is the last letter of the word.
The passengers were numbered on the manifest and the transcriber has used the same numbers.
Suggested given names for abbreviations used on the manifest:
Andr. = Andrew Fride. = Fridericke Ludwg. = Ludwig
Aug. = August Gottl. = Gottlieb Mart. = Martin
Barb^a = Barbara Gottfr. = Gottfried Math. = Mathew
Cath. = Catherine Heinr. = Heinrich Mgth., Mgtha. = Margareth, Margaretha
Cath^a = Catherina Herm. = Herman Mich. = Michael
Ch. = Christian Herrm = Herrman Sim. = Simon
Ferd. = Ferdinand Joh. = Johann Stanisl. = Stanislaus
Fr. = Franz or Fritz Joh^a = Johanna Th. = Thomas
Frdr. = Frederick Jos. = Joseph Theod. = Theodore
Jul. = Julius Wilh. = Wilhelm
For babies (whose age was listed in months) the recorder wrote abbreviation "mt" for months. The transcriber uses "mo"
as the abbreviation in this column.
In the Sex column the recorder wrote female or male or used a ditto mark. The transcriber uses M or F throughout this
transcription for formatting purposes.
Status of children in occupation column: When a family had two or more children, the recorder grouped the children with
a bracket and wrote "her children" or "his children" once for each family. The transcriber has omitted the brackets and
uses the phrase "her child" or "his child" for each child.
Country to which passengers severally belong (Residence or Birth country): Germany was listed for all passengers except
one (#260 Michael Ziesack) who was from the United States, so the column has been omitted. For passenger #260 the
transcriber has added this information to the last column and in Passenger notes below.
Destination column: all passengers were recorded as intending to inhabit the United States, so the column has been
omitted.
Died column: The recorder listed dates for three children (#12 Bertha Latzig, #121 Joh. Kullass, and #163 Frdr Brasch).
The transcriber has added the word "Died" for each date. The transcriber also has added residence/country of origin
remarks for passenger #260 in this column.
Part of vessel occupied: All passengers occupied the part of the vessel known as "Between Decks." This information was
recorded in the last column on all pages of the manifest and in the first column above passenger #1. For formatting
and space reasons the column has been omitted.
Information has been transcribed as seen, regardless of the spelling, abbreviation, punctuation or capitalization used
on the manifest by the recorder. Any exceptions are explained in these Notes.
42 This boy was the first passenger listed on page 2 of the manifest. The recorder (correctly) referred to his
father who was listed on the previous page, so any researcher viewing only page 2 of the manifest would not
think the child was traveling alone.
59 The "a" in Farber is umlaut.
73 Did recorder mean Pommerenke?
82-83 The "a" in Jager is umlaut.
93 Regine Grzenia was the first passenger listed on page 3 of the manifest. Her occupation was listed as "wife"
and the recorder (correctly) referred to the passenger number of her husband who was listed on the previous
page of the manifest.
133 No age was listed for Marianne Jenta. Since she is called "baby" one may assume she is less than 12 months.
140 The "u" in Lullwitz is umlaut.
148 Since Mr Hage has a different surname from #142 Carl Voss, one wonders if Mr Hage is really "his father" or
whether Mr Hage is the father-in-law of Carl (i.e. the father of Henriette)?
164-167 The "o" in Schroder is umlaut.
172-174 The "u" in Schuler is umlaut.
175-177 Surname might be Boroh.
178 Surname might be Glick, with middle initial J.
194 The "o" in Volkert is umlaut.
196 The "u" in Kuhnel is umlaut.
198 The "o" in Rohler is umlaut.
208 The "u" in Jurgen is umlaut.
211 The "u" in Blumchen is umlaut.
227 The "u" in Muller is umlaut.
235-238 In surname there is no vowel between first two letters K-s, but did recorder mean Kasinsky?
240-241 There is an umlaut at beginning of Bauerle, but not clear whether it is over "a" or "u."
249 The "o" in Tonnies is umlaut.
251 The "u" in During is umlaut.
252 The "a" in Rader is umlaut.
260 Michl. Ziesack is the only passenger with "United States" in the column entitled "the country to which they
severally belong." All other passengers are recorded from Germany.
269 Questionable letter looks like middle initial. It is faded and cannot be read.
