?  Indicates a letter or number which could not be determined due to the condition of the
   manifest or handwriting of the original recorder.
^  A ^ followed by a letter indicates that the letter was superscripted.

*  The original document recorded the given name first and the surname second.
*  Passenger numbers assigned by transcriber for ease of reference.
*  The column "Time of Arrival" held only "May 29" and was deleted.
*  The column "Denomination and Name of Vessel" held only "Ship Madison" and was deleted.
   Only on page 2 of the manifest was the full name of the vessel, "Ship James Madison"
   spelled out.
*  The column "Masters Name" held variously "J. Cornick", "James Cornick" or "Cornick" and
   was deleted.
*  The column "Where from" held only "Liverpool" and was deleted.
*  The column "Country to which belonging" held only "England" and was deleted.
*  In the column "Occupation", the recording clerk dittoed the occupation for all members of
   a family, no matter the sex or age. Transcriber has spelled out the occupation, based on
   the ditto marks.
*  The column "Country of which they intend to become inhabitants" held variously "United
   States", "United States of America", or "U.S.A." and was deleted.
