Personal Notes

My gr-grandfather, Christian Ludwig Heinrich Martin HINT, b. on December 10, 1842
in Vietow, Mecklenburg, Germany. He was noted on this passenger list as HINDT. His
naturalization papers read as HINT. He changed the spelling of his surname to HINTT
sometime after his immigration.

Christian bought a farm in the Dundee, Illinois area and also became road commissioner.
He died in his son John's home on May 03, 1929 in Elgin, Kane, Illinois.

His wife/my gr-grandmother, noted as "Johe." on the list, was Johanna Sophia Friedrica
GEHL, always known in my family as Sophia/Sophie, b. July 04, 1844 in Nustrow, Bad
Doberan County, Mecklenburg, Germany. She was noted as a "WD" on the list. I haven't
figured that one out yet. It could have been an error.

Sophia had one son in 1866 who was buried in Germany. Her son Johann, noted as "Joh."
on the list, was not 5 mos. old on Nov. 03, 1869, when the ship arrived in New York,
he was 1.2 years old, so, again, the list may have been made up a year prior to the
voyage. I have a copy of his father's passage paperwork. The date on that paper is
August 11, 1869. Sophia and Christian had four more children after 1869, in the
Freeport/Dundee, Illinois area. Sophia died on February 20, 1927.

When my gr-grandfather booked his family's passage two months before, he and his wife
Sophia may not have been married at that time, according to the Mecklenburg records,
but they were officially married on October 01, 1869 in Germany, so they were already
married while on their voyage, so the passenger list may have been made up months
before the actual voyage.
